I'll be the first to admit that Gintama isn't the slashiest anime in the world. Hell, it's not even close to "romantic": Most of the in-show pairings are either one-sided (Sa-chan/Gintoki and Kondo/Tae), tragic (Hijikata/Mitsuba), casual (Katsura/Ikumatsu) or just plain "whut" (Yamazaki/Tama and Shinpachi/Pandemonium). I suppose this is understandable, since Gintama is first and foremost a comedy shōnen. Still, it does have those more-than-friendly guy-and-guy moments. How else would you explain the fact that GinHiji (Gintoki x Hijikata) and GinZura (Gintoki x Katsura) are two of the most popular pairings in the fandom? Both of them have truckloads of "hints" throughout the series, though I'd argue that the most blatant ones are the following:

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1st Moment - GinZura First In-Show Meeting: Will You Go (Out) With Me Again? (Episode 5)

gintama bl scenes GinZura First In-Show Meeting Will You Go (Out) With Me Again

I wrote "in-show" in the heading because of this one simple fact: Gintoki and Katsura "Zura" Kotarō are childhood friends. They grew up together, and fought together for the losing side of the Joui War, before Gintoki disappeared and Zura continued to harass the shogunate as a Jouishishi leader. Apparently, it wasn't the last time either of them would see each other. Several years later, when Gintoki has his Yorozuya (along with big eater Yato girl Kagura and glasses-wearing teenage swordsman Shimura Shinpachi), he is asked to deliver a mysterious package by an equally mysterious man. When he does so, and the package explodes at its destination (an Amanto embassy), Gintoki gets implicated in a series of recent bombings. Naturally, he runs off with the rest of the Yorozuya, and bumps into a guy who upper-cuts him while screaming: "Zura ja nai, Katsura!" Shortly afterwards, Zura hides out at the Yorozuya's place, introduces himself to Kagura and Shinpachi, and asks Gintoki to fight with him again as the legendary Shiroyasha ("White Demon"). Gintoki gives him a flat refusal, but not before bickering with Zura about his natural perm, which is so totally related to toppling the government. It got to the point where Shinpachi had to call them out for going off-topic: "What the hell are you two talking about?!" What Fujoshis See: Even after years of not seeing each other, and barely having any contact at all, Gintoki and Zura still know how to push each other's buttons. If you listen to their bickering, it almost sounds like a conversation between exes: "Hey, what's up?" "I'm fine, you?" "Are you still free? If you are, well… How about we hit it up tonight and reminisce about old times?" "Like hell I'd do that."

2nd Moment - GinHiji First Meeting: I'm the (Former) Rebel and You're the Cop (Episode 5)

gintama bl scenes GinHiji First Meeting Im the (Former) Rebel and Youre the Cop (Episode 5)

Interestingly enough, Gintama's two primary slash pairings kick off from the same episode. Not sure if it's intentional or not, but knowing how the peeps behind the show operate, it probably is. Anyway, aside from Zura, we're also introduced to Hijikata Toushirou, the long-suffering vice-captain of the Shinsengumi. One of the Shinsengumi's tasks is to quell Jouishishi rebellions — which, of course, brings Hijikata into conflict with both Zura and Gintoki. Especially Gintoki. Why Gintoki in particular? It's not like he's still affiliated with the Joui, right? I don't know either. What I do know is that their first meeting involves Hijikata thrusting his sword (ehem) into Gintoki's face (EHEM EHEM). This is followed by Gintoki making snide remarks about Hijikata's "swordplay", and Hijikata firing back about how he'll "eat up (Gintoki) like the salmon that he is." Gotta love the fukuchou's choice of words! The two then battle it out using swords (of course), before getting coc- I mean, cut off by Sougo Okita, who fires a bazooka at both of them, not caring whether his fukuchou will bite the dust in the process. (Poor Hijikata, hahaha.) What Fujoshis See: Considering that they just met, it's amazing how Hijikata and Gintoki play off each other from the get-go. They're basically each other's foils: black and white, straight-laced police and careless bum, mayonnaise and parfait. Also, when they talk about swordfighting — and actually do some swordfighting — it… can easily be taken to mean something else. I'll leave that to your fertile imaginations, folks!

3rd Moment - GinZura: If You Stay the Same, I Will Too (Episode 61)

gintama bl scenes 3rd Moment – GinZura If You Stay the Same I Will Too (Episode 61)

Over the course of the series, we get multiple demonstrations of just how in-sync Gintoki and Zura are with each other. Of these, few can top the one from the well-liked Benizakura Arc. The arc begins with a series of rōnin killings by a man wielding the Benizakura — a so-called "living sword" that becomes more powerful as it takes down more opponents. One of the man's "victims" was Zura himself, which results in a request by Elizabeth (Zura's giant pet duck-thing) for the Yorozuya to get to the bottom of the "murder". Meanwhile, the Yorozuya gets another request: to find the Benizakura itself. Fortunately (or unfortunately) for Gintoki and the gang, the two requests are linked, and they find themselves in conflict with the Kiheitai, an extremist faction led by Takasugi Shinsuke, Gintoki and Zura's former comrade. Like Zura, Takasugi aims to topple the government, but is much more willing to do it by any means necessary — including the creation of a Benizakura-wielding army of samurai! Raiding the Kiheitai's ship, the Yorozuya barely manage to hold off Takasugi's forces. That is, until help comes from an unexpected source. As it turns out, Zura is still alive! And what's more, he has quite the sexy new hairstyle, which Gintoki goes out of his way to comment on: "Did you get dumped or something?" To which Zura replies: "No, it's an image change. Did you get bombed or something?" Gintoki also says: "It's an image change." After all that mutual joking, they fight off Takasugi's Amanto mercenaries the way they did during the Joui War. They also threaten Takasugi himself, while promising to each other that if one goes rogue, the other will cut him down. What Fujoshis See: From the moment Zura's "murder case" lands on the Yorozuya's doorstep, until the two friends leap from Takasugi's ship a la Lupin, the GinZura feels are strong. For one, Gintoki attacks Nizou (Takasugi's henchman) right after the latter lecherously talks about how womanly Zura's hair is. For another, the way they bickered on the Kiheitai ship, after being ap for a while, makes you wonder why they don't just marry and grow old together already.

4th Moment - GinHiji: Two Is Better Than One, Indeed (Episode 166)

gintama bl scenes GinHiji Two Is Better Than One Indeed (Episode 166)

Remember what I said earlier about the BL moments in Gintama being "surprisingly subtle"? Okay, I take that back (for now) with this one. Seriously, you'd have to be really dense not to notice the blatant GinHiji fanservice in episode 166. (Not that I'm complaining.) The episode starts off normally enough: Hijikata and Sougo are on a stakeout, and Sougo as usual isn't listening to a word his fukuchou says. So Hijikata ends up alone near a garbage dump, where Gintoki also happens to be. The two end up arguing about “who’s more pissed off”, which results in them getting handcuffed together. For some reason, Hijikata doesn't have the keys to his own handcuffs, so he calls Sougo over to free them both, and bring Gintoki to headquarters for obstruction of justice. But Sougo being Sougo, he chains them together with another pair of handcuffs instead! What follows is one shippy/hilarious moment after another. There's dancing the tango complete with rose-in-mouth (pictured above), the increasingly ridiculous solutions to the almighty problem of "how are we supposed to PEE?", the eyebrow-raising shot of Gintoki wrapping his legs around Hijikata's waist while riding a bike, and another shot of Gintoki landing on top of Hijikata while staking out a Joui hideout. Oh yeah, and there's the ending where Gintoki and Hijikata walk away from each other with similar exasperated expressions, complete with Takahashi Hitomi's "Wo Ai Ni" playing in the background. By the way, "wo ai ni" is Mandarin Chinese for "I love you". What Fujoshis See: Did the animators just devote an entire episode to GinHiji? SQUEE!

5th Moment - GinHiji: We're Both (T)horny Bastards (Episode 247)

gintama bl scenes GinHiji Were Both (T)horny Bastards (Episode 247)

First off, a disclaimer: I ship GinHiji and GinZura equally. Just because there's more GinHiji on this list doesn't mean I see GinZura as a less valid pairing. Both of them have their merits, so please bear with me! Anyway, let's get back on topic. In the Baragaki ("Thorny") arc, we get to learn more about Hijikata. We learn that he's a bastard child of a rich guy, a younger half-brother to Tamegoro, and a "thorn" in most people's sides. This is why he warms up to Sasaki Tetsunosuke, a dim-witted young man who gets dumped on the Shinsengumi, because he couldn't get into the "elite" police force Mimawarigumi led by Sasaki Isaburo, his older brother. Meanwhile, Gintoki gets arrested by Isaburo, and is assigned a mission to infiltrate the Joui gang called "Check It Out". Since Tetsunosuke was a former member of the gang, he gets captured by it, and is used as a hostage to stop the Mimawarigumi and Shinsengumi in their tracks. But Isaburo decides to disregard his younger brother's life, and have all the blame pinned on the Shinsengumi instead, so Hijikata responds by fighting. In the process, Gintoki and Hijikata meet each other in battle, with Gintoki at one point declaring to Hijikata that he's the Shiroyasha. Once again, they display how well they fight together, and how they're both worthy of the name "Thorny". At the end of the arc, we see Gintoki flying a paper airplane, followed by a shot of Hijikata in the hospital writing… and having a paper airplane fall by his bedside. Hmm, I wonder who Hijikata's plane came from? What Fujoshis See: You know what they say about couples looking like each other over time? Well, judging by the image above, Gintoki and Hijikata are exactly that. Also, the part where Gintoki admits that he's the Shiroyasha is pretty surprising, to say the least. For one, he's not the kind of guy who even hints at his past, so Hijikata being able to make him do that is… telling. For another, Gintoki may be lackadaisical and eccentric, but he's certainly not stupid. Why did he admit that he's one of the legendary Joui warriors to a member of the Shinsengumi, the Joui's enemies? And that ending scene. Oh, that ending scene. If you think about it, there's no reason for Gintoki to communicate with Hijikata after the whole Mimawarigumi fiasco. He only got dragged into it, after all. Yet there he is, exchanging paper airplanes with a fellow "Thorny".

A Few More Words

I'm pretty sure there are a few more BL scenes in Gintama woth mentioning. There's basically every episode involving Gintoki and Hijikata, the infamous Katsura-fluffs-up-Gin-Sadaharu's-stomach scene, and even the crack arc where Gintoki drunkenly "does the deed" with Madao, of all people. Now, I'm not suggesting that these moments should only be interpreted as romantic ones. The nice thing about Gintama is that you can view every scene the way you want, and still be "right", because the show's just too off-the-wall to have only one valid interpretation. If you see GinHiji/GinZura as ship mates, that's fine. If you see them as vitriolic best buds, that's fine too. At any rate, don't be afraid to sound off about Gintama's "ho yay" subtext in the comments section!

If there's one word that best describes Sengoku Basara, it's "manly". With its badass warlords, epic swordfighting, and a blatant disregard for historical accuracy and the laws of physics, there's never a dull moment in this show. It's glorious. Also, when your cast is at least 80 percent male, you're bound to have moments where "swordfighting" and "manly bonding" take on a whole new meaning. Like these, for instance:

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1st Moment – Masamune and Yukimura's First Meeting (Episode 1)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 1st moment

What Happened: It's the Warring States Period in Japan. Several factions want to bring the country under their control, including the Takeda (led by Takeda Shingen) and the Uesugi (led by Uesugi Kenshin) clans. One night, Shingen dispatches Sanada Genjirou Yukimura, his hot-blooded protégé, to attack Kenshin's camp. As Yukimura makes his way to the camp, he meets Date Masamune, the One-Eyed Dragon and the leader of Oshu. Since Masamune also wanted to fight Kenshin, this put him at odds with Yukimura. The two young warlords spend the night battling it out — until Takeda's ninja, Sarutobi Sasuke, and Masamune's faithful retainer, Katakura Kojuro, step in to stop them. After Masamune retreats, Yukimura starts babbling about how his heart is "burning". He then goes weak in the knees, and proceeds to heap praises on the One-Eyed Dragon ("Such presence… Such fighting spirit… Such strength"). Meanwhile, as Masamune rides back to his camp, he tells himself: "Sanada Yukimura. I'll remember you." What Fujoshis See: Talk about love at first sight! The moment they started fighting each other, you could tell these two were meant to be, as cliché as that sounds. It doesn't help that, after the battle, Sasuke told Yukimura: "Don't tell me he lit a fire inside your soul." (Translation: "Danna, you're in love with Lord Masamune, aren't you?")

2nd Moment – Masamune and Kojuro's Conversation Under the Cherry Blossom Tree (Episode 1)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 2nd Moment

What Happened: In Musashi, the Date soldiers take time off from their usual military duties, and Kojuro joins Masamune under a cherry blossom tree. Masamune grumbles about not fighting either Takeda Shingen or Uesugi Kenshin. Kojuro points out that the One-Eyed Dragon isn't as disappointed as he says he is. Masamune asks his retainer why he stopped the fight between him and Yukimura. Kojuro replies that one or both of them might've gotten killed. Masamune regrets how he allowed Yukimura to "heat him up", and promises to "cool down". They then change the subject, and plot to kill Imagawa Yoshimoto — who, incidentally, is also the target of the Takeda clan. What Fujoshis See: I love the Masamune/Yukimura and Masamune/Kojuro undertones in this scene. Even though they never mention Yukimura directly, Kojuro's insinuations and Masamune's comments suggest that the Tiger Cub of Kai has a stronger hold on the One-Eyed Dragon than Masamune lets on. Also, what's with those cherry blossoms swirling around Masamune and Kojuro? Are the animators trying to tell us something?

3rd Moment – Sasuke's Comment About Masamune and Yukimura's Relationship (Episode 4)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 3rd moment

What Happened: Like the other warlords, Oda Nobunaga — the "Demon King of the Sixth Heaven" — wants to take over Japan. Unlike them, though, he's willing to do it by any means necessary, basic human decency be damned. Therefore, the others decide to band together against him. One of these is Shingen, who asks Sasuke to persuade Azai Nagamasa and Tokugawa Ieyasu to enter into an alliance. Unfortunately, neither of them agree to it, and Sasuke reports this bad news to Shingen. Meanwhile, Yukimura says something stupid to Shingen (again) and gets a megaton punch in return (again). Afterwards, the ninja and his danna have a heart-to-heart talk. Yukimura tells Sasuke that Kasuga — Kenshin's beautiful ninja who came to Shingen earlier — denied any "engagement" with Sasuke. The ninja replies that she's just shy, and starts "teaching" Yukimura about women. Yukimura then talks about how Nobunaga is strong, but the only person he really wants to fight is Date Masamune. Sasuke then gives us this gem: "Looks like you've fallen for him. And he for you." What Fujoshis See: Oh, Sasuke. If only you can hear the fangirl squeals of gratitude the moment you let those words out of your lips. Seriously, though, you shouldn't be the one teaching your danna about women.

4th Moment – Keiji Teases Masamune About Yukimura (Episode 4)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 4th moment

What Happened: If Shingen is interested in alliances at all, it's all thanks to Maeda Keiji. A relative of the Lord of Kaga, Keiji wants a world where everyone could live in peace and happiness. To achieve that, he approaches warlords all over the country, including Date Masamune, and asked him to join the alliance. Masamune turns down the offer, though. Still, Keiji accompanies the Date army to Nagashino, where Azai's forces gather to prevent Masamune from reaching Nobunaga. Along the way, Masamune mentions how he'd rather "leave the excitement of crossing swords with 'him' to the end". Overhearing this, Keiji asks who "he" is, and if there's "someone he wants to fight after the Demon King is defeated". Oddly enough, Masamune gives a vague, evasive answer ("Yeah, I guess.") Keiji tries to make him fess up by pointing out Masamune's "intense look" when "thinking about him". Masamue shrugs it off, while Kojuro catches up with them. Kojuro glares at Keiji, and Keiji shoots back with a smirk. What Fujoshis See: Wow, Masamune's rather… defensive about his relationship with Yukimura, isn't he? It's like he's thinking: "Sh*t, Mr. Pretty Boy knows!" Looks like Keiji has pretty much figured out the love triangle between him, Kojuro and the mysterious third stranger (Yukimura).

5th Moment – The Takeda Clan Heals an Injured Masamune (Episode 6)

sengoku basara bl yaoi moment 5th moment

What Happened: During the battle of Nagashino, Masamune gets injured and the Date army retreats. Since Oshu is too far, the One-Eyed Dragon is brought to Kai instead. There, he is placed under the protection of the Takeda's most precious heirloom: the Shieldless Armor, which has the ability to heal the wounded, among other things. What Fujoshis See: Let's face it: There's no reason whatsoever for the Takeda to shelter the Date army. If Masamune dies, that's one less obstacle in their road to power. Shingen and Yukimura are still warlords, after all. Still, the Takeda — or Yukimura, to be specific — offered sanctuary for Masamune anyway. Sure, the Tiger Cub says that he did it to have a "worthy opponent" after everything's said and done, but c'mon: We all know the real reason Yukimura's so concerned with the dashing leader of Oshu.

[ad_middle]

6th Moment – Kojuro Does Whatever It Takes to Protect Masamune (Episode 7)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 6th moment

What Happened: As if things aren't crazy enough, Matsunaga Danjou Hisahide enters the picture. Being "The Villain of the Sengoku Era", Hisahide captures three of Masamune's men, and uses them to extort both the Date and Takeda clans. If the clans don't give up Masamune's Six Claws and the Shieldless Armor, the hostages would be killed. At first, Kojuro advises a distressed Date soldier to ignore Hisahide, saying that they cannot give up the Six Claws, or impose further on the Takeda. Unfortunately, the One-Eyed Dragon overhears him, and Masamune being Masamune, decides to go after Hisahide. Kojuro begs him not to go, but Masamune insists. A fight breaks out between the two, which results in Masamune getting knocked unconscious again. Kojuro goes after Hisahide instead, but not before regretting what he did to his lord. What Fujoshis See: It's touching how Kojuro will do anything to protect Masamune. He knew he was setting himself up for punishment, but he did it anyway — all for the sake of keeping his lord alive. In fact, every time he says that Masamune is "the most important person" to Oshu, you have to wonder if he really means: "Masamune-sama, you are the most important person to me."

7th Moment – Shingen and Masamune's Conversation (Episode 8)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 7th moment

What Happened: Masamune wakes up (again) and this time, it's Shingen who greets him. They have a man-to-man talk about Kojuro, Yukimura and what it means to be a leader. On this last topic, Masamune observes that Shingen might seem like a benevolent old man, but he's actually pretty powerful in his own right. Shingen laughs this off, and changes the topic to Hisahide — who turns out to be a former vassal of Nobunaga. The two of them start speculating about Hisahide and Nobunaga's intentions. Finally, Shingen asks Masamune to rest and recover. Knowing Masamune's stubborn nature, the Tiger of Kai reminds the One-Eyed Dragon that they still have to fight for the capital after Nobunaga is defeated, and that "he'll want that, too" (referring to Yukimura). At this, Masamune smirks, and says "All right." What Fujoshis See: Looks like Shingen's aware of the love triangle too. First, he reminds Masamune that Kojuro is a "precious retainer". Then, he persuades the Dragon to go back to sleep by casually alluding to Yukimura. Wonder why he thought that would perk Masamune up?

8th Moment – Sasuke Carries Yukimura Like a Bride (Episode 8)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 8th moment

What Happened: Yukimura and Sasuke follow Kojuro to Todaiji Temple, where Hisahide has his hideout. Realizing that Kojuro is injured, the two Takeda clan members hand over the Shieldless Armor to the Villain of the Sengoku Era — but not before Sasuke sneaks off to rescue the hostages. However, Hisahide anticipated this, and blew up the whole place as a result. Angered by Hisahide's treachery, Kojuro continues to fight even in his weakened state. Yukimura tries to help him, only to be frustrated by Hisahide's army of bombers. When Yukimura gets caught up in an explosion, Sasuke leaps and carries his danna to safety. What Fujoshis See: Last I checked, Sasuke also used the bridal carry on Kasuga, who is heavily implied to be his crush. So does that mean he has more-than-friendly feelings for his danna too?

9th Moment – The Necklace-Grabbing Scene (Episode 10)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 9th moment

What Happened: There's a thunderstorm in Kai, and one of its dikes threaten to break and flood the area. When Shingen goes out to repair the dike, he meets Akechi Mitsuhide, one of Nobunaga's henchmen. Mitsuhide breaks the dike, stabs Shingen with his scythe, and sends the Tiger of Kai into the flooding river. Yukimura dives after him, but almost gets drowned instead. Luckily, both Tigers of Kai are saved. Seeing Shingen in a coma, Yukimura gets demoralized. Meanwhile, Masamune walks out of the room Shingen is in, and disbands the Date army. When Yukimura confronts him about this, Masamune pulls at the Tiger Cub's six-coin necklace, and says something along the lines of: "I thought you were stronger than this, Yukimura. Turns out you're a coward after all." The One-Eyed Dragon then walks off to face Nobunaga alone. The Date army tries to follow him, only to be stopped by Kojuro, who reminds them why they fight. At Kojuro's words, Yukimura snaps out of his funk, and resolves to come with Masamune to defeat the Demon King once and for all. What Fujoshis See: Masamune really wants to get up close and personal with Yukimura, doesn't he? He shouldn't worry, though: He has plenty of chances in the finale for that.

10th Moment – Masamune and Yukimura Work Together to Bring Down Nobunaga (Episode 12)

sengoku basara bl yaoi scenes 10th moment

What Happened: Together, Masamune and Yukimura smash through Nobunaga's forces before facing the Devil King himself. In the ensuing fight, Nobunaga literally blows away both Yukimura and Masamune, with the latter getting thrown out of Honnoji Temple and having his wounds reopened. The Devil King comes up to him, and tries to gouge out the One-Eyed Dragon's remaining eye. Fortunately, Honda Tadakatsu — Tokugawa's strongest soldier — flies in to fight Nobunaga, but gets blown to pieces instead. Meanwhile, Yukimura tends to Masamune's wounds, and they go in for one final attack against the Devil King. Needless to say, the two heroes win it out, and everyone is happy (at least, for the time being). What Fujoshis See: Holy guacamole, this finale is dripping with Masamune/Yukimura moments. From the way the two of them work together, to the way Yukimura takes good care of "Masamune-dono", you can see why the fandom loves to ship these two.

Personally, I love how Sengoku Basara is so manly, and yet so unafraid to show the closeness between guys at the same time. Of course, whether this closeness is platonic or not depends on how you look at it. So if you have anything to add to this list, or if you have any other random thoughts about Sengoku Basara, let's talk about them in the comments!

I’m assuming you’re here because you loved Love Stage just as much as I did! But in case you wandered in here without watching it, here’s a little recap:

Love Stage is a short BL RomCom between an otaku boy and a famous actor. Izumi is the youngest of a family of entertainers and he is pushed into the acting business, which is how he meets Ryouma, who has been in love with him for 10 years. How, you say? Well as a child, Izumi played the role of a little girl for a commercial and ever since, Ryouma fell in love with his smile… but believed he was a girl all this time! When he finds out the truth about his long-time crush, the BL starts to bloom!

In fact, Love Stage is a slow paced love story of two straight guys turning gay for eachother because of their emotional and physical attraction. Since the series is only 10 episodes and one OVA I will break it down in episode sets. Let’s fangirl over this super-adorable BL couple from Love Stage!! Izumi + Ryouma BL scenes!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1st Moment - Episodes 1~3: The cat is out of the bag! or... the elephant is?

love-stage-1st-moment

The first episode is only to wrap up the back story between our protagonists, no BL scenes here. In the second episode we already get to see the first kiss between Izumi and Ryouma but it's not quite BL yet! They were just acting and of course Ryouma thought he was a girl. We do get, however, a hint that Izumi’s big brother Shougo and the family manager Rei may share some romance as well. By the end of this episode Ryouma discovers that Izumi is really a guy when Shougo literally lifts Izumi’s dress showing him his adored little bro’s p***s but we just see a super hilarious small, cute, pink elephant stampede running towards Ryouma!

Episode 3 starts to slowly introduce the BL into the series when Ryouma can't stop thinking about Izumi even knowing he’s a guy. Fighting past his manly pride, he has the great idea that he must see Izumi naked so that his mind can once and for all see that he is a boy and that his love cannot be.

Ryouma actually goes to Izumi’s house and tries to take his clothes off by force! Izumi fights against it, but gets pinned down to the sofa! Oh gosh~ Guess what? Ryouma actually gets turned on by Izumi’s crying puppy face and now it starts looking like rape! He loses it and starts kissing Izumi all over admitting he wants to “eat him up!” By now, Izumi seems to not be fighting so much anymore and then...

Shougo comes into the scene and stops them, buu.

2nd Moment - Episodes 4~6: Sweet indecisions.

love-stage-2nd-moment

In the 4th episode Izumi calls himself a BL and admits that he has been aroused by the incident with Ryouma! At the same time, Rei vaguely admits he has been in a physical relationship with a guy too! Ryouma starts to act like an overly attached girl because he can't forget his love for Izumi even knowing he’s a guy (in fact, he thinks that as a guy, he’s the cutest thing ever). At the end of the episode, there is a super cute and honest love confession from Ryouma to Izumi but Izumi only agrees to become text buddies because he feels pity for Ryouma.

By the 5th episode, Izumi starts to see some good in Ryouma and after they finish some manga drawings, Izumi falls asleep exhausted and Ryouma steals several kisses in a super cute way! Aww! To make things better, in the next episode, after Izumi’s manga gets rejected he decides to run away from home and ends up in Ryouma’s house and begs him to keep it a secret.

After a funny bath scene and the mandatory exaggerated nosebleed from Ryouma, things start to get serious when he admits that he cannot resist touching Izumi if he’s in his bed. Izumi, not yet wanting to go back home says to go for it if that’s what it takes!

3rd Moment - Episodes 7~8: I kissed a boy and I liked it. Still bro-zoned him.

love-stage-3rd-moment

The 7th episode starts with some yaoi action as Ryouma gets the green-light from Izumi! Although they’re already in bed and everything looks good, Ryouma decides to stop because Izumi is actually sobbing a little and this is not how Ryouma wants it to be! He wishes for it to be mutual attraction, but secretly Izumi is actually disappointed they didn't do it! Maybe he already was developing an emotional connection with Ryouma?

Later we see another kind of BL when Rei shows his motherly love for Izumi; he was deeply concerned for Izumi’s well-being. This episode is kind of the climax of the series because of what Ryouma does. He take’s Izumi’s rejected manga folder and makes Saotome-sensei review it, sign it and draw Lala-Ruru on it making Ryouma’s image go up 101% in Izumi’s eyes. This makes Izumi confess his honest feelings for Ryouma, but he BRO-ZONED him! Ouch!

Ryouma later kisses him to let him know he loves him as a man and not a brother. Smooth move! And oh, what’s this? Izumi is not refusing his kisses! After this, he realizes he kind of loves Ryouma as a man too.

The 8th episode starts with this backdrop. Izumi feels love for Ryouma but want’s to brush it away because he’s certain that he likes girls like Lala-Lulu. But as he is dwelling on his mixed feelings he gets super excited to get the regular morning text message from Ryouma. Later he decides to start his debut as an actor and Ryouma calms his nerves with more kisses! These two are adorable!

4th Moment - Episode 9: He loves me, he loves me not.

love-stage-4th-moment

Thanks to the debut, Izumi becomes instantly famous and now Ryouma thinks the whole world is his rival in terms of getting Izumi’s affection. Little does he know that Izumi is locked up in his room fangirling over Ryouma and hoarding all the Ryouma-themed merchandise he can. Rin confronts him and asks him directly if he likes Ryouma because his feelings seem so clear. Regardless of what Izumi said, Rin approves of the relationship.

Izumi is relieved to hear that his BL relationship is accepted. Izumi goes to the set where Ryouma is filming a drama and everyone starts to praise him and touch him so Ryouma gets super jealous and snatches him away to another room. Ryouma looks his best when jealous, right!? He pins Izumi down to the floor right away and asks him what kind of relationship they share, because he is scared that someone might pull him away from his arms! Kyaa! As Izumi is about to reply, Ryouma collapses because of a fever! How cliche!

Later on, he’s locked up in his room to research how to handle his feelings with the best information resource an otaku can find; reading a TON of BL manga. Rei goes to console him, like the good mother figure he is, and convinces him to tell him everything. So Izumi just goes ahead and asks him if a sexual relationship between guys hurts!! Rei tells him that it might hurt a little! This resets Izumi's fear of being with a man making him think he doesn't want to have sex with a guy.

Izumi decides to go out with his friends for a while but many crazy fans start to recognize and follow him so he escapes by slipping inside a building under construction. Inside, he finds some guys robbing a salesman and they decide to punish him because of what he witnessed.

5th Moment - Episode 10: Love hurts in more than one way!

love-stage-5th-moment

The robbers from the previous episode approach him but somehow the guys turn all gay towards Izumi and decide to rape him instead... What…? This feels wrong even for yaoi! Izumi manages to escape but thanks to this near-rape experience, he discovers he only wants to be touched like that by Ryouma!

When Izumi reunites with his friend Kuroi, he confesses he is working as an assistant for Saotome-sensei, so he describes what Ryouma did to get the personal message from Saotome sensei we mentioned earlier. Now knowing that Ryouma lowered his reputation for him, Izumi finally decides that Ryouma is the love he's been waiting for.

Ryouma is dwelling on whether what he said was right or wrong, so when Izumi shows up at his door he is sure he will be heartbroken. But without saying a word, Izumi just jumps at him and kisses him willingly! Ryouma stops him out of confusion, while the only thing Izumi says is “let's do it!! And make it urgent!” Without hesitation, Ryouma agrees because he had already refused once! Can't miss the second chance! this is the series finale! a super adorable and innocent BL scene in bed!

Suddenly, BL time stops and we just have Izumi pissed off at Ryouma because IT HURT A LOT! Ahaha! But he gets serious and remembers he didn't say that he loved him properly so he takes the chance to say it, and then Ryouma... starts to cry! Out of joy, of course because he has always loved him so much.

6th Moment - OVA: To please the fans.

love-stage-6th-moment

This OVA is only to see what happens a bit after the series has ended. In all, it feels like it was unnecessary but we do get our fair share of fan service - the best one being the image of the perfect date ending of Ryouma - but it all feels a little bit forced. Izumi is butthurt, literally, so he doesn't want to end up going with Ryouma.

For some reason, Izumi never thought that he could be the one giving instead of receiving… until Rei suggests that he does. Really, Izumi? He quickly goes to Ryouma's house with this motive but ends up being under again because Ryouma assures that he’s done his research and that this time it won't be painful. In the end Izumi decides that it was ok because he plans on growing and learning together with Ryouma as his partner.

Love Stage!! wallpaper 2

In conclusion, you can see that this series was more about honest boys love instead of just spamming the viewer with fanservice. But this is what makes Love Stage great! It makes us fall in love with the romance of the story instead of only the sexy characters’ bodies. And when we finally see some action, although it looks simple, it becomes a big deal because we already have an emotional connection with the relationship.

In my opinion, the best part of this series was how it shows normal men slowly developing feelings for each other as persons and disregards the gender barrier that was set by society for love standards. I wish they some day make a special episode of Shougo + Rin!

10. Irie and Kotoko [Itazura na Kiss]

Itazurana kiss-DVD
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2008 — September 2008 "]

A lot of shoujo portray the male leads as being cool, cold, and aloof. The reason for this is to set up the idea that guys are unattainable and that they consistently need a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve. Aihara Kotoko is a prime example of a girl who stakes her hopes on a guy that is beyond her reach. Irie Naoki is a smart, handsome, and active guy who says that he has no time for stupid girls.

Of course, this prompts Kotoko to work as hard as she can so that she ends up in the same class him, but of course, it’s to no avail. When Kotoko’s house is destroyed due to an earthquake, she and her father are forced to stay with the Irie household, as her father is good friends with Naoki’s father. Of course, the events that transpire are ones that bring Kotoko and Naoki closer together.

The anime itself takes its time in making Naoki’s feelings clear, and when he finally does, it’s because Kotoko had decided to move on from him and to date other people. When this happened, we see a change in Naoki’s character development, although not by much. He tells Kotoko that he doesn’t want her seeing other people because he’s in love with her, and at his words, Kotoko becomes absolutely stunned. After his declaration of his feelings, Naoki does a complete 180 and his attention is completely focused on Kotoko from that point until the very end. What more could you ask for in a shoujo!

9. Jellal and Erza [Fairy Tail]

fairy tail
[Information episodes=" 175 " aired=" October 2009 — March 2013 "]

One of the most frustrating things about Fairy Tail that all fans experience is the fact that there is no explicit confession. The writer always teases his readers and makes them wait for more, sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation of a kiss, or an utterance of what someone is truly feeling. Throughout the anime, we see certain characters interact and notice that there is something different, something very subtle in the way they look at each other. This aspect of romance is present in a lot of characters in Fairy Tail, but one of the most prominent ones that that has become a favourite is Jellal and Erza.

Both characters have a tainted past that has been hinted to have been associated with human experimentation, and because they have known each other for this long, they have an indescribable bond that transcends subtlety. Because they have pasts that are intertwined, surely there are emotions and unresolved issues between them that are yet to be explored. However, after Jellal had started to repent for all the sins he had committed while having a seat in the Magic Council, he admitted to Erza that he did not deserve to live because of his past crimes.

Frustrated, Erza told him that to continue to live is what would fill him with love, and after fighting for just a few moments, the two fell down a hill and ended up on top of each other with no escape from each other’s gazes. Gently, Erza began to bring her Jellal’s face closer, but at the very last second, he pulled her away from him and claimed that he had a fiancée. At the end of the scene, Jellal admits to Ultear and Meredy that people like them “cannot fall in love with people who walk in the light”. Although Jellal didn't admit his feelings to Erza’s face, we are shown that she, too, already knows how he feels. The level of their understanding of each other is another factor that makes this indirect “I love you” seem so much more special.

8. Tomoe and Nanami [Kamisama Kiss 2 JPN: Kamisama Hajimemashita 2]

Kamisama Kiss dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2015 — March 2015 "]

The premise of Kamisama Kiss is an interesting one, as it is about a human girl who obtains godly powers that enable her to help those around her that believe in faith and hope. When she is bestowed with these powers, she is also introduced to a fox familiar who, in the earlier part of his life, was an immense demon who killed others simply because he was not a good spirit. Initially, he didn't like Nanami because of her incompetence compared to his previous “master”, but when he sees how hard she works to do well, he begins to respect her and eventually feel romantic feelings towards her. It is obviously hinted at that Tomoe feels romantically for Nanami in the first season of the Kamisama Kiss series, but it is the second season where we really start to see how much he cares about her. When Nanami is attending an annual meeting with the other gods, she gets lost and reverts to her younger self after she lost her mother to a terminal sickness. In his protective nature, Tomoe follows after her and takes care of her, but the catch is that Nanami most likely won’t remember his kindness to her when she returns to normal, since she is mortal. To his surprise, he finds it easy to love Nanami in this form and to protect her, which really isn’t that different from what he had been doing originally. Towards the end, when Nanami is still a child and has become attached to Tomoe, she asks him if he loved her enough to marry her, and he quietly says yes. The second season of this anime itself ends with the audience not knowing whether Nanami remembers Tomoe’s silent confession that he did love her, but we are given the impression that she indeed knows of his gentle words.

7. Tomoya and Nagisa [Clannad]

clannad dvd
[Information episodes=" 23 " aired=" October 2007 — March 2008 "]

Famous for its deep themes and parallels, there’s a reason why Clannad’s most loved characters are on this list. They start out being so different when they first meet in high school, but the more they know each other, the more they learn to accept each other’s flaws and become best friends. Initially, Tomoya had felt sympathy for Nagisa when she was standing at the top of a hill, asking him if he liked school. Her lack of distance is what intrigued him and caused him to want to help her, eventually creating a blooming friendship and relationship that melted the hearts of those close to them. It all started with the fact that she wanted to reopen the theatre club so that she could act and fulfil her passionate dream of performing on stage for her audience. Naturally, what else could Tomoya do other than to look out for her and help her? There are many cute moments throughout the Clannad anime, but one of the most memorable moments was when Tomoya finally understood his feelings for Nagisa. After saying goodbye to teachers and friends, Tomoya asked Nagisa to come with him to one of the school buildings, where the theatre club room was located. When they entered the room, Tomoya waited for her to look at the whiteboard where he had written, “be my girlfriend”, to which Nagisa began to cry and said yes. Of course, that was only the beginning of their journey, but Tomoya’s confession certainly struck something in Nagisa as well as those who watched the anime — truly romantic!

6. Ichigo and Orihime [Bleach]

Bleach Movie2 dvd
[Information episodes=" 366 " aired=" October 2004 — March 2012 "]

Orihime is consistently bashed on for being too weak and for always calling out for Ichigo’s help in her “annoying” voice. Many fans of Bleach merely dislike her because she is disguised as a character who is always a damsel in distress and can’t do anything by herself. In the Arrancar arc, however, Orihime shows great promise for her character development by deciding to become stronger so she can protect not just Ichigo, but all of those who she holds close to her heart. All the Arrancar had decided that her powers of healing were godly and strong, and thus they wanted her to come to their side and support them instead of Soul Society. Orihime was faced with a choice: either she stays with those she loves and definitely will put their lives in danger, or she gives up her freedom and they stay safe. Naturally, she chose the latter and she was told that she was allowed to say goodbye to only one person. Although there were hints of Orihime showing romantic feelings for Ichigo, it still came as a surprise when she chose to say goodbye to only him, and not to her best friend Tatsuki. At this point in the anime, Ichigo had been incredibly injured and was bedridden. His younger sisters had been taking care of him as well as eating in the same room as him for their meals, wanting to be closer to their brother. Orihime is moved by this, and begins to speak to Ichigo as though he were awake. She says that she sometimes wished she could've been reborn five times with five different lives, because there were so many things that she wished to be. As she listed off her aspirations for her different lives, she paused and looked at Ichigo, saying that despite wanting to have different professions in her five lives, she knows that she would find her way to Ichigo, and fall in love with him in each life. This act of tenderness presents a somewhat fearless side to Orihime, as her confession is nothing but sincere and selfless.

5. Minato and Kushina [Naruto: Shippuuden]

Naruto Shippuden (1)
[Information episodes=" Unknown " aired=" February 2007 — present "]

The story of Minato and Kushina is one that has touched all the hearts of Naruto fans. When Naruto first meets his mother from inside his own consciousness, she tells him how she fell in love with and married the Fourth Hokage, Minato. The nature of the "reunion" between a mother and her son is already an emotional ordeal, but when she blushes and begins reminiscing is when the story really takes a better hit. After Kushina tells the story of her romance with Minato, audience members are moved by the subtlety of emotion that is present in their relationship. Kushina was an outsider who was forced to come to Konoha because there was no other way for her to survive safely from the Second Ninja War. She was ripped away from her family and never heard of them again, making her life already incredibly lonely as a young girl. When she first meets Minato, she pays no mind to him and continues to defend herself against bullies, a trait that you definitely saw present in Naruto as well. When it was apparent that Kushina could not save herself from her kidnappers, she left behind strands of her hair as a means of creating a trail for someone to find her. Naturally, Minato was the one who sensed her absence from the village and chased after her, taking out and killing the ninjas that were taking her away. Although there is no explicit "I love you", the reason so many fans favor this "confession" is because Minato tells Kushina that he believes in her strength, and that when she has faltered, he will be there to be her fearlessness and ferocity. Despite not being traditionally romantic, Minato's confession to Kushina is one that certainly makes audience members feel especially drawn to.

4. Ed and Winry [FMA: Brotherhood]

fullmetalalchemist DVD
[Information episodes=" 64 " aired=" April 2009 — July 2010 "]

One of the best things about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is that it pursues the story of two brothers who want to find answers about humanity and the condition of a government system that no longer works to protect the people, but rather, to protect themselves. Not only that, but amongst sprinkles of comedy and heart-wrenching scenes that are sure to break your heart, there are hints of romance between characters that is so subtle, but incredibly realistic. Edward and Winry can be considered one of the “main” couples of the series, and throughout the 64 episodes, we get to experience a love that slowly grows and blossoms firsthand! What makes this couple so great is that it’s not the stereotypical anime couple, where the girl is incredibly shy and reserved, and the guy is ‘cool’ and aloof. The dynamics between Edward and Winry make their characters fit well together, creating a sense of belonging by the end of the series. At the end after Alphonse has gotten his body back and both brothers are freed from their sins, Edward is about to leave and do more research on alchemy so that he becomes a complete expert. It took a while to decide that this was what he wanted to do -- along with Alphonse, of course -- and when he did decide this, it was Winry who was seeing him off at the train station. As a proposal, Ed asks Winry to give her half his life in exchange for half of hers. Unamused, Winry complains that alchemists should stop thinking about everything in terms of ‘equivalent exchange’, and goes on to say “Half of it? I’ll give you all of it!” to which Edward stares at her until she realises what she’s said. Embarrassed, Winry says that she’ll give him a certain amount, deciding that 85% of her life would suffice. Laughing, Edward pulls her in and hugs her, saying that he would be back soon. As cheesy a confession as that was, it was definitely one that made FMA fans smile and laugh — the mark of a true romance that is natural and healthy.

3. Ryuuji and Taiga [Toradora]

Toradora1
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008 — March 2009 "]

Ryuuji and Taiga’s relationship is an interesting one because initially they didn’t like each other but rather liked other people before realizing that they have feelings for each other. Ryuuji’s character is that he looks intimidating but is actually a gentle guy whereas Taiga is a short and cute girl but is actually very hot-headed and has the tendency to snap at people, that in itself makes for an interesting dynamic. Initially, Ryuuji likes Taiga’s friend and Taiga likes Ryuuji’s friend and throughout the anime Taiga manipulates Ryuuji to do anything for her under the pretense that her friend will like Ryuuji. Moreover, both of them show sides to them that eventually make them fall for each other. Eventually, they both confess to each other on a bridge. Taiga opens up about her family problems and Ryuuji laments how if he was never born then his mom would have a better life which prompts Taiga to tell him not to look down on life and remarking that she’s alive because he is here and pushes him off the bridge. After that ordeal Ryuuji asks Taiga to marry him when he turns 18, but before Ryuuji can say, “I love you” Taiga jumps off of the bridge to say that along with Ryuuji. Both Taiga and Ryuuji eventually get together in the end and for the viewers they find that the ending is satisfying because all conflict is resolved and everyone earns their happy ending. The opposites attract dynamic that is present in them seems to be appealing to people because it gives them the impression that love can appear even in people that look like they can’t stand each other. It also gives a mostly realistic approach to the character’s archetype, which makes this couple feel real and even heartwarming.

2. Yano and Nanami [We Were There JPN: Bokura ga Ita]

bokura ga ita dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" July 2006 — December 2006 "]

Notoriously known for being a heartbreaking shoujo, We Were There [JPN: Bokura ga Ita] is a story that explores two hearts that unknowingly come to leave each other with everything they have. What sets this anime apart from other shoujo is the fact that despite the fact that the main characters are fifteen when they are first introduced, the creator makes it known that this is no regular high school romance. There are hardships for both characters that enable them to grow into more compassionate people and they are not limited to just their romance. While a lot of shoujo romanticise the aspect of high school romance, We Were There is certainly an exception. The foundation of Yano and Nanami’s relationship in high school is a setup for what their relationship will turn into in later years. The first genuine “I love you” that is uttered is by Yano while they are at a school festival after their summer vacation. Up until that point, we see Yano as an aloof character that doesn’t really care for things like romantic relationships. Granted, he confesses to Nanami only six episodes after the anime’s debut, but there are obviously problems that Yano still faced after he told Nanami those three precious words that she couldn’t believe she was hearing. One of the reasons that Yano’s words are so touching to the audience is because from the very start of the story, we know that he had a past that caused him to have issues with relationships in general. When he admits his feelings to Nanami, it’s because we are finally seeing a side of him that surely changes the entire story.

1. Hinata and Yui [Angel Beats!]

Angel Beats!
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2010 — June 2010 "]

Despite popular belief that Kanade and Otonashi have the best “I love you”, a lot of Angel Beats! fans are forgetting that Hinata’s devotion to Yui is one of the most emotional moments of the entire anime, and is also definitely one of the most touching confessions in anime. Angel Beats! is also already known as one of those anime you should avoid if you don’t want to get emotionally attached to any of the characters. Throughout the anime, characters slowly disappear from the cast and are given a new chance at life, as the anime itself is about reincarnation and the idea that God is unfair and takes away youth at its most crucial moments. Of course, what kind of audience can the producers hope to bring in if there’s not at least a little bit of romance? Angel Beats! is an anime about achieving goals that one couldn't achieve in their previous life. In her previous life, Yui was sick and wasn't allowed to be active in sports. As a result, after she died at a young age, she wanted to be as active as possible around her friends in the afterlife. When she wished to try everything she couldn't when she was alive, she began to disappear. Admitting that there was one last thing she wanted before she found a new life, Otonashi frowned at the fact that he couldn't give her that satisfaction. Jumping in at the last second, Hinata, the boy who Yui had mostly been fighting with, promised that if she was sick again, he would love her and take care of her. He promised that, if God was unfair to her once again, he would find his way to her and fall in love with her. Smiling as she teared up and began to disappear, Yui asked Hinata to “take the burden off her mother”, to which Hinata smiled back and said he would. Although not as dramatic as Kanade and Otonashi’s exchange at the end of the anime, Hinata’s integrity and kindness towards Yui is heartbreaking, as the promises that he makes to her resound deeply within our hearts.

These 10 scenes in anime that speak of love are surely those that touch you to your very soul. All these moments have been moving when they were aired on television, and they still continue to touch the hearts of those who are invested emotionally. While there are other confessions in anime that are heart-warming, these ones are the ones that take the cake in terms of setting up a romance that is incredibly powerful. Top 10 Most Brutal Anime Deaths

Stuff that can be categorized as brutal, or savagely violent as those guys at Oxford like to put it, is something anime certainly isn’t lacking. Although the transition from actual hand-drawn animation to computer generated images seems to have reduced the once incredibly graphic anime violence, it’s still a prominent feature in many anime releases these days. And anyway, sometimes the brutality doesn’t come from the amount of red pixels, sometimes the most disturbing and most brutal is a result of something being totally unexpected, the context it appears in, that is. But enough chit-chat, let’s get started with one of our Halloween-specials – Top 10 Most Brutal Anime Deaths!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Hellsing Ultimate

hellsingultimate
[Information episodes=" 10 " aired=" Feb 2006 – Dec 2012 "]

Kicking off our list is one of many dog-related entries. In fan-favorite cult-series Hellsing, main protagonist Alucard joins forces with the group named after his former nemesis, the Hellsing Organization. In this particular clip vampire pretty boy Luke Valentine meets his maker, after meeting Alucard (not his maker). Alucard, after shooting off his legs, unleashes a hellish beast known as Baskerville – unsurprisingly inspired by the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel – which devours the unfortunate bloodsucker in a rather nasty manner. Hellsing got more where that came from, and if you’re a gorehound (that’s what the kids call a horror fan nowadays) you have to absolutely check this out.

9. One Piece

One Piece dvd
[Information episodes=" 713 (still airing) " aired=" October 1999 – ongoing "]

In the 483rd episode of one of the definitive veterans of anime, we’re ‘treated’ to the death of Portgas D. Ace, adopted brother of arguably most flexible characters in all of Japanese animation. That the passing of a family member of the main protagonist was going to be a heartbreaking affair was obvious, but you probably weren’t expecting it to be this brutal: Ace meets his maker in the form of a burning fist, as he heroically sacrifices himself to save his younger brother. As a paper representing Ace’s life force burns to ashes, Luffy sobs while the other characters watch in disbelief. Dramatic and shocking – strong stuff, man.

8. Blood-C

Blood C
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2011 - Sep 2011 "]

Etymology might seem a bit out of place for a Halloween-themed article, but the fact that the origin of the word ‘brutal’ can be traced back to an old French term referring to ‘lower animals’, seem to perfectly with this scene from 2011’s Blood-C. While we’re on the subject of history, elephants were a very popular means of execution in medieval India, were sadistic rulers would sentence convicts to be crushed or having their limbs pulled apart by trained elephants. Though more reminiscent of a dog than an elephant, its brutality is on par: the series feature many mention-worthy scenes, but the one where a schoolgirl has her thighs pulled off deserves special attention, especially the sight of her torn-off limb dangling in the air like a human chicken drumstick.

7. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Mahou Shoujo Madokau2605Magica
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan 2011 - Apr 2011 "]

At first glance, and here I mean that in the literal sense, in the first ten or so minutes of Madoka, it seemed like just another standard magical girl anime, though with an interesting, psychedelic art style, but that’s because it was produced by Shaft. Then, as magical girl and mother-like figure Mami battles one of the first ‘witches’ in a candy-like wonderland in a magical girl tutorial for new recruits, Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki, while we’re still unsuspectingly enjoying this seemingly normal anime, it suddenly turns violent, and the diet Coke and chicken drumsticks you’ve been munching suddenly announce their respective returns. It suddenly breaks its own rules, like if *** Double Cartoon and Anime Reference *** Dexter had, instead of chasing his annoying sister out of his lab, pulled out a toothbrush and, like that infamous scene in Nisemonogatari, started incestuously brushing his sister’s teeth *** end of reference ***, and it is this breach of our expectations that makes this particular scene so brutal. There are many parallels to this scene, making you think of one of those moments that made you realize that the world is crueler than your child-self had initially thought. Echoing what Evangelion showed us regarding the consequences of putting teens in charge of saving the world, this particular scene was the one that gave us second thoughts about trading our souls for slightly disturbing lolita-outfits. To cite YouTube commenter SuperMollie44: “I THOUGHT THIS ANIME WOULD BE CUUUTTE;-;”. Didn’t we all, Molly, didn’t we all.

6. Another

Another
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan 2012 - Mar 2012 "]

The ‘that must hurt’-factor is strong with this one, in a series not exactly lacking brutal, disturbing deaths and suicides on the seemingly haunted high-school where the action is set. I’m sure all of you horror fans out there will see the homage to or at least the inspiration from a certain infamous eye-gouging scene from cult-classic 1979 movie Zombi 2, as the genius of the scene is the pacing, the unavoidability of what’s going to happen. There’s also something Final Destination-ish with this particular scene, something about the inevitability of death, but now I’m getting carried away and putting to much though into this, so just click on the link below and check it out for yourself. The teacher’s suicide is also a classic, by the way.

Somehow violence against defenseless animals evokes more empathy than the slaughter of humans, and in an anime which frequently sees limbs flying all over the place, it is strange that it is a scene of a dog being beaten to death by a few straight-up evil children that leaves the deepest mental scars on most viewers. A sociological study by the Northeastern University actually found that a majority showed that the test subject showed more empathy towards an injured dog than they did for a human adult, which might provide some relevant, though probably undesired, scientific basis for this particular scene.

4. Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the Northern Star)

[Information episodes=" 109 " aired=" Oct 1984 – Mar 1987 "]

Cracking his fists, soaring through the air, and finally showing off the eponymous martial arts technique of the Fist of the North Star, Kenshiro delivers one of the awesomest finishing moves ever put to screen. Like the Phantom he’s ruthless towards the ruthless, and shows no mercy for the mutated punks of the post-apocalypse, especially those posing a threat to his gurl (I’m just assuming that an atomic blast that blew away social order also would have a severe consequences for the grammar of its respective society, but I might be wrong). Since finding a ‘scientific’ explanation for the list’s brutal ways of kicking the bucket became somewhat of a recurring theme, and since Kenshiro was partly inspired by Bruce Lee, it seems appropriate to mention that the Fist of the North Star move closely resembles the so-called Touch of Death, a legendary move that killed the opponent by pressing certain special spots on the body, according to ancient Chinese scripts. Fairly unreliable sources say that this was the cause of Lee’s death, which in turn inspired the titular event of a certain Tarantino movie. Pop-cultural references aside, Kenshiro’s deadpan coolness is only matched by his passive-aggressive ruthlessness as he turns his back to his opponent uttering “お前もう死んでいる” – “you’re already dead”. Like a boss.

A good contender for ‘everyone’s greatest fear’ must be witnessing one’s own parent’s death, like *** spoiler for everyone lagging four years behind *** the Stark sisters are forced to do in the first season of Game of Thrones *** end of spoiler alert ***. Attack on Titan recently gave us one of the most brutal depictions of exactly this in its very first episode. Though a graphic depiction, the worst part of the scene where *** spoiler alert for the anime novice *** Eren’s mother gets devoured isn’t the blood nor the crushing sound as it bites her corpse in two, but rather the sadistic grin the giant’s face as well as the terrified expression on Eren’s face as he watched helplessly *** end of spoiler alert ***.

Even though the aforementioned study by the Northeastern University also showed that most students that participated showed as much empathy for wounded puppy as an infant in a similar state, and it’s therefore an open question whether the shock value evoke more empathy or apathy (clever play with words), deaths of children are bound to have some kind of impact on even the most hardcore anime Connoisseur (from French connaître – ‘to be acquainted with’). In a largely unparalleled brutal scene, which also happens to be featured in the video for Genocyber’s end theme, an unforgivingly gory depiction of two children getting brutally murdered broke taboos at the time, and still manages to shock and disturb. Set to a tune that probably got 1994’s youngsters stomping their feet and ignoring nonsensical lines such as “I want you and love you, fairy dreaming” and “Midnight, like a phantom of blood, twinkles at a noisy town” (okay here I have to admit that I’m depending on a probably sub-par translation from Animeworld, but anyway, you get the idea), the aforementioned gorehounds are sure to be left satisfied with this incredibly graphic clip.

10. Nicolas vs. Doug [Gangsta.]

Gangsta dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 — September 2015 "]

The summer of 2015 was a rich time for anime that was badass, and of course, Gangsta. is one of them! It tells the tale of two men, Worick and Nicolas, who were called and paid to do any job, which essentially meant that they were jacks of all trades. Their line of work fell under dangerous territory, but they were mostly well-respected men and were thought to be incredible workers. Of course, the fact that they live in a dangerous territory is not a coincidence, and both Nicolas and Worick have pasts that are sure to make you love them even more. While there are mini conflicts within their neighborhood, there’s always a higher power that causes turmoil amongst all characters. Essentially, Gangsta. is a story of discrimination within a governmental system that started with causing people to suffer, and expecting them to pay for it. One of the main things that we notice about Nicolas is his angry features — like he’s going to kill you, which he very well could. He is also someone who was trained in this area of expertise, since he is a Tagged, to use a katana sword to slay enemies. A Tagged essentially refers to something akin to human experimentation, where a large number of people are given drugs to test their ability as a human being, but of course, it ultimately falls through and those who are Tagged are ostracised because they pose a potential danger to society. While we only catch glimpses of Nicolas’ strength in the beginning, we really start to see his ruthlessness when he’s fighting Doug, another Tagged of a lower rank. When these two spar, it’s incredibly intimidating to watch, because of the sheer difference in skills between those who are Tagged and those who are considered to be normal human beings. Not only was the animation for this scene extremely well-done, but being able to see their fight in the anime creates a whole new experience than when you witness it in the manga. It’s fast-paced and mostly in the air, but it was without the use of weapons apart from Nicolas’ katana! The exchange between the two was one of the finer things about fight scenes in anime!

9. RIn vs. Amaimon [Blue Exorcist JPN: Ao no Exorcist]

blue exorcist DVD
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2011 — October 2011 "]

The first thing that we find out about the Okumura siblings is that their biological father is Satan. Their mother, of course, is a human woman and had died giving birth to them. The only strange thing about this fact is that the older of the two brothers, Rin, is the one that possesses demon powers, while Yukio does not. The previous Paladin, the head exorcist at the academy they attend, also known as Shiro, was the one that raised the two boys as humans, and not as demons. Of course, Rin and Yukio are left as orphans when Satan, who had been possessing Shiro, completely takes over his body which ultimately kills Shiro. Because of Rin’s big secret, he has to be extra careful when he trudges the floors of the academy, otherwise his life could be in danger. Amaimon, also known as the Earth King, is incredibly interested in Rin’s existence and the fact that he is classified as a demon. When he and Rin begin fighting due to the fact that Amaimon was intending to harm Shiemi, Rin’s love interest, the power that exuded from both of them was incredible. Rin had been given a sword by Shiro, and it was a seal to keep his demonic powers in check. However, when he fights Amaimon, the sword slowly begins to break, which causes Rin’s powers to overwhelm his body and cause him to lose control. From that point on, Amaimon realisees that he cannot win against Rin — which is a huge testament to Rin’s powers, since Amaimon is considered incredibly strong! Watching the extent of Rin’s powers is intimidating, as he still has to learn to possess those powers.

8. Touka vs. Mado [Tokyo Ghoul]

0.TokyoGhoul
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2014 — September 2014 "]

One of the reasons that Tokyo Ghoul became so popular incredibly quickly after its anime release is because of how intensely and forcefully the plot was introduced. While it starts off as lighthearted and kind of cute, the first episode ends with countless questions and leave you wanting more. Of course, the biggest deal is that Kaneki, the protagonist, had turned into a Ghoul instead of having died when he was eaten. Naturally, this opened up a whole new world to not only him, but to us, as well. Although Kaneki struggles with questioning his existence and as to whether he’s a human or a Ghoul, he is introduced to a new family of Ghouls who take him in and help him to deal with his new identity — one of the people being Kirishima Touka. From the very start, when Touka’s character is introduced, she’s seen as someone who is compassionate towards those close to her, and as a result, she is incredibly wary of those who she acknowledges as her enemies. Mado is akin to a hunter of Ghouls and when he kills them, he uses their quinques as his own weapons to hunt other Ghouls. When Touka received wind of this from a younger Ghoul named Hinami, she was livid and immediately went after him. Mado, of course, had secretly been wanting to capture Touka for years but couldn’t find her because of the masks that Ghouls wear. When Mado recognized her mask (a bunny), he became excited and wanted her head. The tension and anticipation throughout this fight was immense, as both characters are filled with hatred and a bloodlust that surpasses other fights in the anime. Because Touka is so filled with rage when she finds that Mado used Hinami’s mother’s quinque as his new weapon, her actions are quicker than usual and she is, of course, able to take out Mado for the horrid thing he had done to not just a Ghoul, but a child.

7. Levi vs. Female Titan [Attack on Titan JPN: Shingeki no Kyojin]

attack on titan dvd1
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 2013 — September 2013 "]

Attack on Titan was one of those anime that completely blew up in terms of popularity when it was announced to be an anime. The fanbase was huge, and for some good reason, too, since the plot of the series is incredibly unique and dark. The fanbase itself made tons of jokes whenever their favorite characters would get killed off, because they claimed it was impossible for certain characters to stay alive all the way through — even if they were considered protagonists. One of the most adored characters is Levi, because he’s small and yet he is a corporal who leads his men into battle, knowing that he is always taking a risk and putting his life on the line. In the anime, one of the defining moments of Levi’s character was when he was fighting against the Female Titan. During his training with his men, he always made sure to tell them to make a clean cut on a Titan’s neck in order to ensure immobility. While on the battlefield, he had his squad that backed him up, Levi’s genuine disgust for Titans really showed through right before he cut the back of the Female Titan’s neck. His lack of hesitation and incredible skill is what makes anime-watchers feel awe — because he’s such a badass and he merely thinks of it as doing his job to protect humanity. Because he’s so skilled at what he does, and because he genuinely wanted to keep the human race alive, his fight and ultimate win against the Female Titan certainly did wonders for the plot of the story.

6. Yato vs. Bishamon [Noragami]

Noragami dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2014 — March 2014 "]

In the supernatural world of anime, there is always conflict between spirits and gods that inadvertently involve intense violence. Noragami is unique in that one of the protagonists is a human girl named Hiyori who is connected to both the real world and the spiritual world, due to a car accident that she was in. She is dragged into a world of gods and spirits and apart from trying to get herself back to normal, Hiyori also experiences the inner networks of the gods and their relationships with each other. Bishamon is one of the gods in the Noragami universe who is a high-ranking God. She has many Regalia that she uses as weapons when she fights off demons and sends lost souls to where they should lay to rest. Because of her reputation amongst those in the supernatural world, she and Yato, the male protagonist, don’t see eye to eye. There is a history between them, of course, that we don’t know about, but the tension between them makes Hiyori feel uneasy. Bishamon sends her Regalia to attack Yato and his Regalia, Yukine, and the hostility between the two gods is evident and prominent. To Hiyori, watching these two gods fight each other is intimidating, and it makes her, as well as the audience, realize that true strength that Yato possesses. Not only was he up against Bishamon, a highly regarded god, but his reputation as the god of calamity certainly made the fight more interesting to watch!

5. Tsubaki vs. Masamune [Soul Eater]

Soul Eater dvd
[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" April 2008 — March 2009 "]

Soul Eater is the type of shounen that most people like because of its concept of weapons “eating” souls in order to transform into a Death Scythe, after consuming one hundred souls. Each meister has their own scythe and they have incredible relationships with them, since it’s impossible to actually improve as a tag team if they don’t have some form of a relationship. The main meister and scythe tag teams are Maka and Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki, and Death the Kid and the Thompson sisters. While all of the scythes have their own sets of skills, Tsubaki is an interesting scythe, because of the fact that her familial background is not revealed until later on into the series. She’s a sweet girl who is incredibly caring towards Black Star, but her bloodline is one that would make others fear her if they knew her. In a particular arc of Soul Eater, we are introduced to a demon blade that is said to possess people into using him so that he can gather and endless supply of souls to eat. When Tsubaki receives wind of this, she of course, knew that it was her brother when the name Masamune was uttered. It was her older brother — someone she had never gotten along with because of their differing perspectives on how a scythe or weapon should live: with or without a master to be loyal to. Tsubaki enters another realm to see her brother, to speak to him, to at least attempt to get through to him. When his sister is right in front of him, Masamune is unamused and proceeds to tell her that they will settle this family feud right now. After incredible sets of skills from a family with a noble title, the two siblings are at a crossroads, with Tsubaki torn between saving her brother from a life of darkness, or to save herself and give up on it. Naturally, the villain is taken down, and not without an incredible fight, first. Masamune’s bloodlust did not affect Tsubaki, and she still possessed the same integrity that she had long before the feud with her brother. As such, Tsubaki received character development from a fight between hers and her brother’s ideals.

4. Suoh Mikoto vs. Munakata Reishi vs. Isana Yashiro [K-Project]

Kproject group
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 2012 — December 2012 "]

From the very start, K Project is a complicated anime to understand because it’s filled with so many unanswered questions until much later on in the plot. The gist of the anime is that it revolves around Clans of the area and it questions each character’s motives and goals. Of course, belonging to any Clan was a good sign for a character, because it meant that he was worthy enough to belong to a clan. If someone did not belong to a clan, they were seen as potentially a threat, because they served no one and they were loyal to no one. Naturally, that was seen as a safety hazard and was usually dealt with accordingly. When the Kings of the Clans are chosen, they are usually chosen because they have a strong willpower and can lead others to trust them and live safely. When that is put to the test and the three main Kings of the series fight each other, it truly is a spectacle. The three Kings have immense power and most definitely use this to their advantage. No other member of any Clan is directly involved, as it’s revealed in the series that only Kings can kill Kings. Previous fights and spars in the series were based on and motivated by the complexity of the relationship between the Red Clan and the Blue Clan. However, when the anime was coming to a close, it was crucial to create a climax — a moment in which everything is pieced together to make the audience understand, or at least try to understand, what had been happening the entire time. All questions are answered when Isana Yashiro fought against the Red King (Suoh Mikoto) and the Blue King (Munakata Reishi). This, of course, meat that Yashiro had to have similar powers to the two, and of course, it’s revealed that he is the Silver King. The battle between the three is truly luminous in that the animation is gorgeous, and the fact that it’s done so well makes the storyline that much more painful and distinct. Not only did we get to see Suoh truly be a badass in his fight, but we also get to see Yashiro’s true skills when it comes to fighting. Talk about development!

3. Gintoki vs. Jirochou [Gintama]

dvd Gintama
[Information episodes=" 265 " aired=" April 2006 — March 2010 "]

One of the best things about Gintama is that apart from its crude and unadulterated comedy, is its fight scenes. Gintama truly has the mark of a shounen although it does have a few inconsistencies that cause it to be unconventional. There’s an abundance of specific moments in the anime that can touch different parts of your heart, and what most fans love about the series itself is that it never loses sight of its characters’ true motives. Although Gintoki is lazy and doesn’t pay Kagura and Shinpachi as he always should, he was once feared as the White Demon, something that has been referred to several times in the anime. One of the best demonstrations of his title is when he gets into a battle with Jirochou, one of the Four Devas of Kabukicho. When we are first introduced to Jirochou and Gintoki’s relationship, it’s one that is better and causes us to think that they wouldn’t get along. Of course, Sorachi, Gintama’s writer, has an interesting way of making us all love Gintoki with each and every fight that he gets himself into. Jirochou had originally joined the Four Devas to watch over Otose at the request of her deceased husband, despite being in love with her. Not only that, but he had a daughter, Pirako, who he felt extremely attached to, despite abandoning her. From the very start, Jirochou poses as a problem because there was simply too much in his past that affected his current state. Although there is often mock conflict between Otose and Gintoki because he doesn’t pay his rent, he is still protective of his landlord and goes against Jirochou to protect not only Otose, but the other Four Devas, as well. When the two cross katanas, it is found that they see themselves in each other. Despite this fact, they continue to fight until Jirochou, of course, is taken down, but with dignity. Not only did Gintoki prove that he could definitely be trusted with the task of protecting Kabukicho, but he also freed Jirochou from his burdens and allowed him to go back to his family. One of the most amazing things about Gintama is that ultimately, there usually is no bad guy — which is what makes the fights that much more awesome!

2. Natsu and Gajeel vs. Sting and Rogue [Fairy Tail]

fairy tail
[Information episodes=" 175 " aired=" October 2009 — March 2013 "]

Fairy Tail is becoming one of those shounen that everyone has watched at least a few times. It’s beginning to be thought of on the same level as Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece, which is a huge step for the series! Qualities that cause this anime to be so high up there is its characters who are always willing to show off their strength in order to protect their guild. During the Grand Magic Games, after Fairy Tail had its “strongest guild in Fiore” title stripped, Natsu and Gajeel are faced with Sabertooth’s — the new strongest guild in Fiore — Dragon Slayers: Sting and Rogue. What’s revealed about these twin Dragon Slayers is that they are thought to be second-generation Dragon Slayers. While this means that some of their powers are more enhanced compared to Natsu and Gajeel, they still do not have the initial strength that Fairy Tail’s Dragon Slayers do. The fight between them is absolutely mesmerizing, as you watch flash of light after flash of light, and watching the spectators be in a state of awe as they watch Dragon Slayers tough it out. While Natsu and Gajeel don’t have the “powers” that Sting and Rogue possess yet, their sheer determination to win, along with their now-second-nature strength is what drove them to believe in themselves and ultimately win against the Sabertooth Dragon Slayers. Not only is the audience amazed by Natsu and Gajeel’s refusal to give up, but so were the other characters that watched their friends from afar. Truly, this fight is a testimony to what Dragon Slayers are definitely capable of.

1. Scar vs. King Bradley/Wrath [Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood]

fullmetal alchemist
[Information episodes=" 64 " aired=" April 2009 — July 2010 "]

One of the most influential anime that depicts Western culture while still displaying Japanese roots is definitely the Fullmetal Alchemist series. It’s filled with so many intricately placed secrets that contribute to the plot, and it never strays from the actual mission that the Elric brothers wanted to achieve. There have been praises from countless fans about the villains of the series — how they are all so well-developed and that the end of their character arcs suits them incredibly well! It takes a while for all of the villains to be vanquished, of course, but the most satisfying, in terms of plot and character motivation, is the fight between Scar and King Bradley. Throughout the entire series, we as the audience know that King Bradley is working with the Homunculi. Edward and Alphonse don’t know, and neither do other members of the State until the anime is coming closer to an end. Scar, who had detested the government and held them accountable for the death of his brother, is finally faced with King Bradley, the king and president of Amestris. He is appalled by the fact that the man is able to allow millions of lives being lost, merely for the production of a Philosopher’s Stone. Essentially, King Bradley (aka Wrath) is afraid of old age, and yet, that is the very way in which he dies after his Philosopher’s Stone is extracted from him. The fight itself between the two is one that is high in tension, as there is a ridiculous supply of pent up anger on Scar’s part. At this point, the audience does not feel sympathy for King Bradley, but rather, is rooting for Scar to gain back his justice. It was a rough ride, but the end results definitely contributed to restoring Amestris back into order.

5 Centimeters Per Second 03

During the Age of Romanticism, writers in search for the next great story would usually leave their hometowns and exile themselves to far-flung areas to revel in the beauty of the natural world. The idea then was to be inspired by the beauty of nature, and by doing so, the mind’s psyche, the ever-elusive muse, will be invoked. Many masterpieces in literature feature this, most notable of them being Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which features a number of scenes with the story’s characters using the beauty of nature as a means to be inspired. With anime, there are a number of scenes that are simply so aesthetically pleasing, they cannot help but invoke feelings of catharsis among their viewers. These feelings can be many things, from joy, melancholy, fear, and even awe. Thus, here are the top ten beautiful landscapes, or scenes in anime along the years.

There is just something about anime classics that remain so memorable and poignant. In the case of the 1984 movie, Do You Remember Love, HIkaru, who is then involved in one of anime’s most famous love triangles, persuades Minmay to perform a song. Though the song is quite mellow and simple, it nonetheless touches all those involved in the war, including the Zentraedi. The simple performance, the mellow riffs of the song, set against the the movie’s climactic battle with the alien forces, makes this scene a wonder to behold. Its intricate, smooth, hand-drawn frame-by-frame motions are quite an irony in itself, showing beauty in the midst of the most brutal of wars.

The episode’s final moments, showing the black wing over a hill being showered by white feathers, does not just trigger as sense of admiration for the beauty of the scene, it begets a sense of awe for the man who once held the mighty weapon.

5. Kenshin Wanders Again - Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin dvd
[Information episodes=" 94 " aired=" January 1996 - September 2008 "]

Among the classic anime scenes that truly pulled at the hearts of fans all over the world involves the fateful farewell scene on the 31st episode of the Rurouni Kenshin anime. After Lord Okubo’s assassination, Kenshin decides to confront Shishio, but before he starts on a journey that he may not come out of alive, he decides to say goodbye to the person that matters most to him - Kaoru Kamiya. Set in a firefly-lit night, the subtle farewell scene became one of Rurouni Kenshin’s iconic moments, with Kenshin pulling Kaoru into an embrace, his first truly intimate moment with the Kamiya Kasshin adjutant master, as he gives her his gentle farewell. Though drawn relatively simply compared to today’s standards, the masterful direction, the sepia-tinged montage, as well as the perfect, emotional orchestral score, made this scene one of the most beautiful moments in anime.

Within the emotional whirlwind that is Clannad: After Story lies this golden scene, a scene when Tomoya Okazaki finally overcomes his depression over his grief for the death of his wife and embraces the role he has to take as a father to the young Ushio. 3. Simon and Nia’s Wedding - Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann dvd
[Information episodes=" 27 " aired=" April 2007 - September 2007 "]

After the massive battle that featured mecha of epic proportions literally shooting galaxies as shurikens to the enemy, Gurren Lagann ends on a very simple note. The lovers, Simon and Nia, who have fought together in the war, know that their time together is very limited. Hence, they decide to get married, in the presence of all their friends. The wedding scene at the end of Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann is almost an antithesis to the entire series, being small-scale, simple, and very subtle. However, it is for its very simplicity that it has become one of the most beautiful moments in anime, reflecting the fleeting feelings of bliss that man is granted during his stay on Earth.

2. Kanae’s Dream - 5 Centimeters Per Second

5 Centimeters Per Second dvd
[Information episodes=" 3 " aired=" February 2007 - March 2007 "]

5 Centimeters Per Second is almost like a moving work of art, with its stunning visuals and its emotional soundtrack. It is a story of first love and the pain of its first loss. In this scene, Kanae, who has been in love with Takaki, finally realizes that she will never have his heart, for he has already given it to someone else. The young girl’s feelings are perfectly depicted, albeit symbolically, by her vision of Takaki and another, unknown girl watching the Earth’s gentle rise in the distance. The scene itself is beautiful, not simply because of its aesthetics, but because of the underlying theme that it represents.

[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" November 2004 "]

Howl’s Moving Castle is widely regarded as one of Hayao Miyazaki’s best works, featuring many of his signature touches such as a plot that is intricate and characters which are unforgettable. This sequence, where the story’s heroine, Sophie, finally discovers the truth behind Howl, is one scene that is very memorable. The quality of the scene itself is trademark Studio Ghibli, but beyond the aesthetics of this scene lies its significance of it to the main storyline, as as heroine finally is able to understand Howl and his past after this. By watching the young Howl literally catch a falling star, Sophie finally begins to see Howl for who he truly is.

It’s that spooky time of year again when the temperature drops and pumpkin spice is literally floating in the air. Hot apple cider welcomes those returning from a long hayride or a difficult corn maze, but once the sun sets a different mood is struck and the bonfire gives off an eerie glow as tales of shock and horror are told. Those who love good scare actively seek out the adrenaline rush that accompanies the thrill of being spooked. While Hollywood keeps pumping out crappy Saw and Paranormal Activity sequels, I’ll introduce you to some of the scariest moments in anime around. Gather round, children, and listen to the tales I have to tell!

10. Pokemon: The First Movie

Pokemon The First Movie dvd
[Information episodes=" ? " aired=" July 18, 1998 "]

Ash Ketchum is a kid from Pallet Town whose sole mission is to become a Pokemon Master. To fulfill his dreams, he sets off to challenge the world’s Pokemon Gym Leaders in order to obtain badges and eventually be recognized. Together with his best friend (and pokemon) Pikachu, Ash is able to overcome almost any obstacle that has been laid in his path. That is until Mewtwo showed up. Everything was just fine until Mewtwo crapped in everyone’s ice cream with his gloom and doom attitude. Ash, being the naïve child that he is, basically gave up battling by the rules and instead decided to join the fight himself despite KNOWING that his opponent is one of the most powerful psychic pokemon in the world. So Ash just runs straight towards Mewtwo and…is turned to stone. Pikachu runs to his aide and cries in a very Pikachu like way and everyone watching is holding their collective breath. The entire scene is heartbreaking, sad, and also scary because as a child watching this movie it is hard not to think that Ash is dead and that the entire series is over. The fear is short lived though as everyone’s collective tears bring Ash back to life. If only that were true in real life.

She is accompanied by a strange spirit who wishes to help her regain her lost identity after causing all of her turmoil. At the end of her journey she must choose only one of the worlds to stay in with the guy that she likes the most. This anime is based on an otome game of the same name and while a good portion both of the anime and the game are filled with romantic and light-hearted fun to make girls’ hearts soar, one of the potential suitors has a really twisted idea of love. Toma may look like a harmless kid, but his intentions and possessiveness lead to some extremely alarming behavior. At the beginning, Toma finds the main character passed out in the street and takes her to the hospital for an examination. Once she is given the all clear, Toma takes her home where she notices that she is being bullied though she does not know why (because no memories). Toma continues to check up on her giving the main character the impression that they are dating. At one point she even asks Toma if they are dating and he confirms this. Once the bullying begins to escalate, Toma suggests that she stay at his place until everything dies down. She agrees and stays for a few days before becoming restless. She leaves Toma’s house to investigate her apartment. Toma discovers she has left and brings her home. From here on out begins the really frightening part. Toma begins to DRUG her food in order to keep her “safe” at his home. When she finally realizes what is happening, he LOCKS HER IN A DOG CAGE. At one point he even threatens to RAPE her so that she would “truly become his” because he would never leave her mind after such an act. The worst part is that after all this happens, she still dates him. Truly a nightmare.

8. Cowboy Bebop

[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 3, 1998 – April 23, 1999 "]

A spaceship name the Bebop carries around a group of misfit bounty hunters who have a knack for getting themselves into horrible situations with no payoff. The crew’s most prominent member, Spike Spiegel, is an eccentric guy who loves meat and can beat anyone in hand to hand combat. He’s a risk taker whose past eventually catches up to him. Toys in the Attack is one of the most memorable episodes the series has to offer. A mysterious illness plagues the crew after a long forgotten fridge is opened. A mysterious creature is unleashed upon the ship and begins to infect each crew member one by one. The ship’s navigator Jet is struck first, followed by Faye, Ed, and Ein. Spike is left to fend for himself while also managing the rest of the crew’s sickness. Eventually he remembers what he left in that lone fridge many moons ago and begins his mission to destroy whatever has become of it. This episode takes a lot from old-school Hollywood horror films. Faye’s shower scene in particular is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. In fact, the entire episode is quite similar to the plot of The Thing. For horror buffs, it really is a pleasure to see an anime nod to the horror genre so much as well as give some fun scares.

7. Monster

monster dvd
[Information episodes=" 74 " aired=" April 6, 2004 – September 27, 2005 "]

Naoki Urasawa’s manga Monster is a masterpiece and so is its anime adaptation. Urasawa insisted on taking as long as possible for the anime so that the story could be told as well as the manga. The entire plot focuses on a promising young surgeon who chooses to save the life of a young boy over a rich hospital donor due to the fact that the child arrived first. After such a decision, his career begins to slip and he is passed for an important promotion. To make things worse, the boy he saved is a psychopathic murderer. In order to fix his mistakes, he sets out to right his wrongs by killing the boy who is even worshipped as a demon. The young boy, Johan, is the perfect representation of evil. He is good looking, charismatic, and cold blooded. He was raised at an orphanage aimed at reviving the Third Reich by finding a boy Hitler. Johan actually incited a riot which caused the deaths of all of his fellow orphans as well as the caregivers. Johan was the only one who made it out alive. Johan is the scariest thing about this anime because everyone knows someone like Johan. He can be anyone. A neighbor. A classmate. A coworker. He’s personable and well-liked. He’s basically the antichrist and no one would ever suspect him.

6. Hellsing Ultimate

hellsingultimate
[Information episodes=" 10 " aired=" February 2, 2006 "]

The protestant organization named Hellsing was established by the Queen of England in an attempt to fight off paranormal threats (mainly vampires) that roamed the streets of England. After a long rest, someone has begun to create an army of vampires for no other reason than to start a war of chaos. The leader of Hellsing, Integra, summons their ultimate weapon, the vampire Alucard, to eliminate the problem. The main antagonist of the series are Nazis. Or to be more precise, Nazi vampires. And their leader is none other than a crazy Hitler wannabe who only wishes for war because apparently that is his thing. When a man like this is adored by bloodsucking demons of the night, nothing is too gruesome. The only thing scarier than a horde of vampire zombies is Alucard, an evil count in his past life who put spikes through the heads of his enemies and displayed them in front of his castle. When he releases all of his abilities he takes the shape of the famous Cerberus, the dog who guards the gates of hell. In fact, one of the most memorable and scariest scenes in the series appears when a “worthy” opponent finally confronts Alucard in the basement of Hellsing’s headquarters. After fighting in his regular form and having his attacks be blocked and even countered, he finally acknowledges his opponent by released his true power. His body is then slowly transformed into the stuff of nightmares. He is no longer a solid being and his shape and presence fills the room with an overbearing sense of horror. Even the man that had challenged Alucard backs down and declares the vampire a monster deeply disappointing him. Just the vision of Alucard’s amorphous body can give anyone nightmares. The art style of Hellsing Ultimate really enhances the gritty mood of the plot. The thick outlines juxtaposed with such muted colors really gives a feel of darkness and loss of hope. The character designs are amazingly detailed as well as the blood and gore of combat.

4. Paranoia Agent

Paranoia Agent
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" February 2, 2014 – May, 17, 2004 "]

A young illustrator under extreme pressure to create a new mascot character as successful as her last one, falls victim to an assault by a mysterious suspect only known as “Shounen Bat”. Soon the entire city reports attacks by the golden roller blading boy who knocks out his victims with a baseball bat. The only thing connecting each of the victims are that each is suffering from depression and anxiety, which “Shounen Bat” seems to take away. He becomes the perfect scapegoat and soon everyone wants a piece of him. The entire series Paranoia Agent is a psychological thriller where the attacker is created in one young woman’s mind and spreads into something bigger and more tangible. The series is more of a critique on modern day society and people’s inability to accept responsibility for their own mistakes and shortcomings. Instead, they look for an easy excuse and “Shounen Bat” provides the perfect answer to all of their problems. Perhaps the real scare happens once realization hits and viewers can’t deny that this is a real problem in everyday life. While “Shounen Bat” won’t come to kill everyone in the city with a problem, the lack of honesty and trustworthiness in the world currently certainly makes others wary of human interaction, something necessary to survive SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! The most terrifying part of the series happens when the entire town begins to pin their problems on “Shounen Bat” and he begins to manifest as a real living and breathing being instead of an urban legend only much like the game telephone, he is now much larger and stronger as a result of each person exaggerating the original story. As people become more and more aware of him he begins to terrorize the city more until he becomes similar to Godzilla and devours the city. This is the end of the series and it is really poignant. Was “Shounen Bat” real or was it all a result of people’s carelessness?

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion

evangelion DVD
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" October 4, 1996 – March 27, 1996 "]

Shinji is summoned by his father, Gendou, who is the leader of a private weapons company called NERV, to operate a giant robot which may or may not be harboring the soul of his dead mother. He is forced to fight against aliens from another planet nicknamed “angels” that wish to cause “Third Impact” and force the planet to be reborn according to the wishes of one person. He sets out with two other pilots, Asuka and Rei, to protect the Earth, but ultimately fail. While the “angels” in Evangelion are quite terrifying, the actual horror comes in the form of one man: Gendou. Gendou is soulless and uncaring with the exception of his long, lost wife. The audience only knows this because Rei is discovered to be an exact clone Shinji’s mother from her younger days. In fact, Gendou has a basement full of Rei’s growing at his disposal. Shinji even develops feelings for Rei, who is a CLONE OF HIS MOTHER. Gendou is even so cold as to sleep with Ritsuko’s mother in order to use her intelligence to create the super computer Magi. Once she has found that she was betrayed (she found out about Rei) she is STILL loyal to Gendou and even infuses a part of her soul into the Magi program which later turns on her only daughter Ritsuko. The scariest moment involving Gendou is when he forces his son to kill his best friend. Shinji is alerted to fight a new angel and just as he is about to finish his mission with the final blow, he realizes that the “angel” is actually another Eva unit that has gone berserk. It dawns on him that his friend is the pilot inside and so he hesitates to crush the head housing the cockpit and his friend. Gendou ends up taking control of the unit and does the job for him. Talk about cold and uncaring. Gendou shows no emotion to his son and doesn’t seem to care what happens to him, which is probably why after Third Impact, Shinji decides to wipe everyone out. With Gendou for a father, I suppose no one can quite blame him.

Some honorable Mentions: Full Metal Alchemist - Edward and Alphonse bring their dead mother back from the dead. Also, Nina. Elfen Lied - An alien woman goes berserk on a laboratory, leaving it a bloody mess. While most of these anime are unconventional, each are spooky in their own way and cater to different types of scares. While the fear of the unknown can be quite terrifying, the fear of the familiar provides a bigger impact on those watching. The familiar is all around. It can be a loved one, a dear pet, or perhaps a place once thought to be safe. Have the safe feeling given off from these ordinary and every day routines be betrayed, perhaps, is the scariest feeling of them all. So don’t get too comfortable or you may be next!

"High school boys doing stupid things." That pretty much sums up this anime in a single sentence. This series follow 3 characters - Hidenori, Tadakuni and Yoshitake. This series portrays their misadventures and their everyday life as they progress along high school. Hidenori serves as the group de facto leader. Usually when there is a crazy plan to do something ridiculous, it's usually calling the shots. I don't know whether his ingenuity is something to be praised, but you can be assured that his antics are often funny as hell. Tadakuni can be called the 'airhead' in the group. He is also perhaps the most normal amongst the trio and serves as the voice of reason - which usually backfires and he ends up being convinced to join in anyway therefore conferring him his airhead title. Yoshitake is the pseudo-cool guy in the group. The pseudo is intentional. He gives off a cool vibe and even comes up with awe-inspiring lines sometimes only to ruin the moment by doing something utterly absurd which is beyond this world. He is my favourite character because even when he fails, he does it stylishly. When you put these 3 unique characters together, you will be treated to laughter due to their silly antics. Scenes include slapstick comedy, exaggerated dialogue and even getting caught in an embarrassing situations! The abundance of silly happenings they are in makes it all the more fun and truly indeed, this anime continues to rank high in numerous comedy lists. So let’s get to it! Today, we will count 10 moments in the anime that is definitely gonna make you laugh or at least put a smile on your face.

Moment No. 10: "Role-play" from Episode 2

10 Moments in Daily lives of High School Boys

Ever saw a long pole, or even a stick lying by the road and you imagine it to be the coolest sword like… Excalibur? Then you start swinging it around making slashing noises. Well, in this scene the boys are doing just that! They saw a stick on the road and imagined it to be a sword while acting out an imaginary scene. Tadakuni of course (spoilsport…) laments the idea of it as they are on the street but eventually joins in adding more to the comedy. Nothing gets to me better than this scene. Game and an anime lovers can relate to this scene. When you hang out with close buddies who also happens to be gamer and anime lovers, anything and everything is your world. You can even make a stick become a sword and start a fight . You can be in a busy street and still break out into goofy antics while the stares of everyone are ignored as you indulge in your make-believe world. To other anime lovers, you're just weeaboos. LOL, But that is what makes it all the more fun…

Moment No. 9: "Literature Girl" from Episodes 1, 2, 5 and 11

09 Moments in Daily lives of High School Boys

The Literature girl first appears in episode 1 under the setting of the typical boy-who-meets-a-girl-by-the-river. However, instead of talking like normal human beings, both of them happen to have the same thought of delivering cool sophisticated quotes and lines. I mean come on! Their opening conversation is something like this: “The wind… is troubled today. Indeed… however, it weeps too”. Whatever happened to the golden age of hi and byes? In the end however, it turns out that the literature girl simply wanted to fulfil her fantasy of her romantic scenario and Hidenori was the chosen person. The thing is that the protagonist in her story is this lonely otaku which adds to the humour but much to the dismay of Hidenori. The literature girl spawned its fair share of jokes and memes. That's how much the literature girl scenes holds in the anime. Literature girl is often shown in a windy, open grass field with Hidenori. Both would usually come up with cheesy lines while standing in a composed and straight face. Looks are deceiving after all and what made these scenes special and funny are his soliloquy which is totally different from what he is actually saying. Both are usually caught in numerous situations in the anime and it's never boring to see these two talking... with themselves…

Moment No. 8: "Daily Lives of High school GIRLS" Segment starting from Episode 3

08 Moments in Daily lives of High School Boys

Dubbed as “High school Girls Are Funky”, this short segment is usually featured at the end of the main show. It starts from Episode 3 and is featured in future episodes. It shows the girls doing the same everyday mundane activities such as complaining about how the boys managed to get a whole series to themselves while the girls are not mentioned, talking behind the boys' backs as well as discussing their favourite food – sweets. Basically, instead of Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, it’s Joshikosei no Nichijou (Daily Lives of High school Girls). Whatever nonsensical gimmicks the boys tries to pull off in the anime; you can expect the same for this segment. It's a shame that this segment is usually a 2-5 min. short at the end of the main show as there needs to be more female exposure in the series! So I would like to make a declaration: Who's with me on the idea of a new season for this series??? Daily Lives of High school Girls (Funky Girls). Of course, we're also hoping for a second season for the original DKNN.

Moment No. 7 "Career Day" from Episode 7

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou capture episode7

It is the day for the boys to hand up their career day questionnaires up to the teacher. Sensei however was sharp and she knows that the boys were up to no good; therefore she decided to check the answers on the spot in front of the whole class. The amount of nonsensical answers given was gold. In the future I would like to be: (Not a Lawyer) (Teacher’s Lover) (A ghost). Just as the teacher was getting exasperated, the final answer delivered the best punch line. Questionnaire Answer: Enter College Teacher: MAKE A JOKE!!! Remember that one time which the whole class got together to troll the teacher just because it's so boring... or maybe your teacher is an awesome person? There's something about the whole class trolling a teacher that makes it all the more fun. It gets funnier when she is expecting a serious thought out answer to a life question. What do you want to be in the future? “I do not want to be a lawyer”. Such retort. Much funny. So sugoi. I wish there were more people like the person who wrote that.

Moment No. 6 "Ping Pong with a twist" from Episode 3

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou capture episode6

Here we find the boys playing a game of ping pong after their bath. The only rule to this specific match is that they may only hit the call after giving the correct answer to a given topic. The topics are chosen amongst themselves and what they chose are honestly… quite good to sabotage someone with. First up we have the moons of Uranus. Tadukuni lost. Next we have the names of foreign presidents. Tadakuni lost. Tadakuni is one point away from losing but he has a trump card. It's his turn to choose the topic. He reveals his specialty and ultimatum and puts his all into this. He chose countries that have a moon on their flag. He lost. As expected of the airhead of the group. So you can only hit a ball only if you answer the question correctly. Easy enough. Except amongst friends, no one sets easy questions. Names of foreign president! Moons of Uranus? These are too specific for a match to even last more than 2 strikes. I didn't even know that Uranus had more than 1 moon! Kudos to Tadakuni for retaliating with an equally challenging question only to know one answer... Yeah... Well played. He can compete with Akahisa from Baka To Test for the Baka title.

Moment No. 5 "You're eating a what now?" from Episode 1

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou capture episode5

This is the first ever scene from DKNN. It shows the main character Tadakuni on his way to school as he is running late while eating a piece of bread for breakfast. He is joined by his two friends with one eating a bowl of ramen and another eating a plate of curry rice. Very unconventional… but hilarious when in that situation. I especially love the fact that both Hidenori and Yoshitake are doing it with a normal attitude as though as they are accustomed to it all along. Points to them for feigning ignorance! I believe that it was the first ever scene that made DKNN a favourite comedy show amongst fans. Already, it started off by presenting a stereotype of anime characters straight off the bat with a twist. When you're late for school, you have bread for breakfast... unless you're like these two who had ramen and curry while running to school. More often or not, the first few scene of an anime are the most important ones, as they determine whether potential viewers will stay on or drop it, depending on their satisfaction with the first few minutes. DKNN did well in bringing in viewers with slapstick comedy based on clichés. Also, since we are on the topic of food...

Moment No. 4 "Don't drop your food in anime" from Episode 12

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou capture episode4

While hanging out, one of their friends dropped a sausage as the various characters try their bests to save it from falling to the ground. It starts with Yoshitake almost seemingly catching it only to have the stick poke his hands as he launches it up into the air again as he winces in pain. As Hidenori tries to save the day, he ends up in the same predicament as Yoshitake. One of their unnamed friends dived down and launches it up again - into a girl's face which rebounded into the back of some passerby shirt that caught it and threw it straight into Tadakuni's stomach. As the sausage finally fell to the ground, the guy who dropped it in the first place picked it up nonchalantly and continued to eat it. Did you see how long that description was? All this in the name of food. The measures that one take to protect food in anime. Anyone here remembers what Nichijou is well known for? (for those that watched it). The same way Yuuko prevents her octopus shaped wiener from falling to the floor, DKNN portrays the same scene with a hotdog and the efforts the protagonists take to save it. The moral of the story, everything is extreme and dramatic in anime, even when it comes to dropping food. Also, the three-second rule do not apply here apparently.

Moment No. 3 "You don't deceive a girl to see her panties" from Episode 9

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou capture episode3

The boys called in one of their classmates to help them solve their Internet connection problem. What she doesn’t know is that this is an elaborate plan setup by the boys in order for them to look at her panties. Whilst directing her to the modem which is conveniently placed on top of a cupboard, they managed to steal a peek. The mission was a success, so they ought to be happy right? Wrong! They regretted it as they did something which cannot be undone. They had to resort to deceiving a girl just to see her panties. Rather, to quote, "You don't deceive a STUPID girl to see her panties" This scene reminds us that no matter where it is in the world, boys will be boys. Calculative, Deceptive, Shrewd when it comes to panties. The answer is pantsu - the solution to every problem because we believe in the power of pantsu. Other than that... doing stupid stuff like putting on skirts maybe...(discussed further later). Yeah... The anime is called Daily Lives of High school Boys for a reason.

Moment No. 2 "Where are my Glasses?" from Episode 9

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou capture episode2

Hidenori apparently loses his glasses (even though they are on his head) Tadakuni notices it however and is wondering why is everybody feigning ignorance. Eventually, he theorizes that everybody is playing along for the purpose of a practical joke. In the end however, everybody was really oblivious to the fact that the glasses were indeed on Hidenori’s head after all. As a bespectacled person, finding your glasses is always a hassle as they could be ANYWHERE if you have a short term memory. It gets more annoying when your friends decide to prank you for a whole 30 mins and make you search high and low for them. Having that experience, I thought I knew what was coming when I saw this scene but NOOOO…Some humans in the world, are really just oblivious. My heartfelt sorrow to the guy who noticed it... he didn't even get a chance to throw the punch line...

Moment No. 1: "Let's try on female clothes" from Episode 1

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou capture episode1

The final and funniest scene on the countdown! This scene is the iconic DKNN moment. It shows the boys deciding to try on female clothes with all three of them proceeding to different rooms to try on the garments . As they emerged, the truth was revealed. Only Tadakuni was in a skirt as the other two burst out laughing. Things escalated quickly because they commented that Tadakuni actually looked good in a skirt and they had him do poses in the outfit. It would be okay and all... only if the sister hadn’t walked in at the material time. This is a scenario where both situation and context is hard to explain... I will admit it, I am still a bit scarred from this scene... but then again, it's so hilarious you have a hard time deciding whether to close it or to continue. This scene introduces the comedy style of DKNN.. Throughout the scene you're just going "Don't do it bro!!! You just had to... didn't you?!" This scene also actually made me question who the real females in the anime are as he actually did a good job by being effeminate. Have you ever felt your pride as a man shrink so deep into a hole until you wince in pain while laughing at the same time?

danshi koukousei no nichijou wallpaper

So that's pretty much for the countdown of the Top 10 funniest scenes in Daily lives of High School Boys. For those that have already watched the anime, doesn’t this anime appeal to you? Isn’t it a perfect example of what a slice of life anime should be? That's the beauty of 4-komas manga. Is short, sweet and the punch lines are delivered quickly. Readers, what do you think? 9) Angel Beats - Yui Disappears

Angel Beats!
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 3, 2010 - June 26, 2010 "]

Though it is initially not clear, Angel Beats takes place in the afterlife. The entire cast of characters are children who have died in ways that did not allow them to come to terms with their death. Towards the end of the series, they begin to discover that they have the power to help each other accept their fates, and move on. However, this means that they disappear, leaving the others behind. Yui discovers that she is unable to move on because she was crippled in her past life, and believed that no one would ever want to marry her. However, her friend Hinata loves her and wants her to move on even if it means seeing her go - and in Episode 10 he promises that in another life, he will fulfill her wish no matter what it takes. Tears of happiness begin to well up in the corners of her eyes, before she disappears. Though there isn’t full-on sobbing in this scene, it is certainly touching enough to appear here.

Code Geass- Lelouch of the Rebellion DVD
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 6, 2006 - July 29, 2007 "]

There’s nothing more beautiful and tragic than dying fighting for the one that you love. Shirley Fennette's sweetness and genuine nature provide a stark contrast to the infamous protagonist of Code Geass, Lelouch vi Britannia. She is a kindhearted person, who is seemingly blind to Lelouch’s dark nature. Eventually she becomes a casualty of her feelings to him, sacrificing her life in an attempt to help the person she loves. Lelouch’s humanity is questionable, but when he comes across Shirley on the verge of death in Episode 13 he shows profound emotions. Through tears, she vows her eternal love with her dying breaths. Her eyes quake and tremble, as she tries to remain strong, before eventually giving in to tears. One of the saddest scenes in the series to be sure, even the cold and calculating Lelouch is moved to tears. The scene in Episode 12 where Shirley cries over her deceased father is a close second.

Madoka Magica dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 7, 2011 - April 22, 2011 "]

The conflicts commonly faced by magical girls in anime consist of leading a double life and getting swept up in complicated love triangles. These shallow struggles pale in comparison to the problems presented to the cast of Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica who are faced with true evil, and not only in the form of the witches they are tasked with destroying. As a result, this show portrays the life of a magical girl as one full of death, disaster, and unimaginable loss. This show explores the concept of different timelines, and parallel dimensions. The character Homura, relives the same month repeatedly in order to prevent Madoka from making a grave error. There is a scene in Episode 10 where Homura and Madoka lay side by side in the rain. Madoka begs Homura to go back in time and save her, but she has one more request. To prevent Madoka from becoming a witch, here and now. Homura, ever loyal to Madoka, agrees even if it means destroying something dear to her. This tearful scene is arguably the most emotionally charged in the series.

2) Clannad: Afterstory - Kazuto’s Funeral

clannad after story dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" October 3, 2008 - March 27, 2009 "]

Gang warfare is a terrible thing, especially when it destroys lives and claims young victims in the process. This is a topic that is explored in Clannad: Afterstory, which as a series is an emotional, tearful rollercoaster. In one particularly compelling scene, Yukine makes a speech imploring her late brother’s fellow gang members to end the fighting. Kazuto is a young gang member who’s life is claimed by such violence. His friends hold a ceremony for him. While it's perfectly normal to cry at a funeral, this scene in Episode 8 produces some especially compelling tears. In a tearful speech, Yukine reveals to all of her friends that although their friend Kazuto died fighting, what he really wanted was to see an end to the violence he found himself caught up in.

This will mean bringing the old gang back together, something much easier said than done. As the story progresses, it becomes evident that Menma coming to peace with her death and moving on has just as much to do with her friend’s forgiveness of themselves, as well as her own acceptances of her fate, which comes to a head in Episode 11. The final scene of the series is an emotionally charged one, with all of her friends telling Menma that they love her one last time. Menma is so overcome with joy in this scene that she too, is moved to tears.

10. Episode 19 of School Rumble Ni Gakki (School Rumble 2nd Term)

It’s the second season of School Rumble and the story of delinquent Harima and his crush Tenma continues. But this turns out to be a harder task than expected since he also has to fight through a blizzard and hurry to hand his manuscript over to his editor. Will Tenma finally recognize his efforts and the feelings he has for her? This episode is a really fun continuation of the normal storyline. You still have the same cast fighting the same problems, but the Christmas setting makes it feel more special. You will root for Harima and just wonder how his story will turn out. This special deserves the first spot on our list with lots of laughs, craziness, romance and unspoken love confessions.

9. Episode 12 of Chrno Crusade (Chrono Crusade)

chrono crusade dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" November 2003 - June 2004 "]

Next up is a special episode from an all-time favorite show, Chrono Crusade. For this episode, the main cast takes a break from hunting demonic powers and instead goes out to the streets and performs charity work. The three girls try their best to act according to the spirit of the season, but soon realize that one of them, Azmaria, has in fact never had a real Christmas. They spend her first Christmas together and celebrate the cheerful and charitable side of the season. The atmosphere of this episode is really heartwarming since it shows a different side of Christmas, without all the expensive presents and decorated shopping malls. Maybe it was because of the scene at a local orphanage, but somehow this episode really reminded me of the story of A Christmas Carol. This special definitely deserves a spot on this list.

8. Episode 17 of Azumanga Daioh

azumanga daioh dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2002 - October 2002 "]

Fans of school and Slice of Life stories are probably already familiar with the unique girls of Azumanga Daioh. In Episode 17 they get their very own Christmas adventure! The girls get in an argument over Santa Claus and whether he really exists. 10-year-old Chiyo insists that he is real and even goes as far as saying that he is her father. But the Christmas madness doesn’t stop there and the girls spend a crazy day together filled with presents, reindeers, Christmas trees and late-night karaoke. The strength of Azumanga Daioh is the fact that it stays down to earth and really revolves around what the main cast experiences in their everyday lives. This episode is no exception and tells the story of how the girls spend Christmas together. Fans of the anime should definitely rewatch this episode and everyone who is new to Azumanga Daioh should still be able to enjoy the cheerful and easygoing vibe of this special.

7. Episode 31 of Hetalia: Axis Powers

They hype over Hetalia might be over, but that doesn’t mean that you should completely forget about these international boys. In their Christmas special the main cast gets together to spend this special day together. Of course they are all their stereotypical selves, depicting exaggerated versions of their nationalities. This episode revolves all around how each boy spends Christmas and how they plan on enjoying their winter holidays. Hetalia has a unique concept and that’s what makes it so special. Each boy has his very own personality and when they all come together you can be sure there will be chaos, fights and lots of fun. This is definitely the case for this special episode which will bring you a little bit closer to the main cast. More importantly, you can actually learn something about Christmas traditions in different countries, so why not give it a try?

Let’s move on from comedy shows to a more serious story, with the second season of Shakugan no Shana. Episode 22 explores the romantic side of this anime. I don’t mean to spoiler the fun for those of you that didn’t get to enjoy this show yet, but let me just say that there will be love letters, confessions of feelings and an unexpected twist towards the end, all centered around the romantic setting of Christmas Eve. What makes this episode so special is the fact that it builds up towards the finale of the season. You can already see how the characters are drawn to each other and how everything will soon come to an end. Starting the final chapter of this show on Christmas Eve makes it even more special, so check Shakugan no Shana’s second season out if you haven’t already.

5. Episode 12 of Minami-ke (The Minami Family)

Minami-ke dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 2007 - December 2007 "]

The three Minami sisters are not known to take a break and Christmas definitely isn’t an exception. Their Christmas adventure is mostly set at home and really shows the importance of spending this day together with your family and loved ones. Just like in Azumanga Daioh we have a girl who still believes in Santa Claus and a group of friends that enjoys themselves over a delicious Christmas dinner. Minami-ke really brought their show to a nice ending, since the final episode after this special is set on New Year’s Eve. Even though this show might be short with just 13 episodes, by the end of it you will feel connected to the characters; it is episodes like this Christmas special that make this possible. Nothing outstanding really happens, but you can really feel how the sisters care for each other and how much they enjoy spending Christmas together.

She remembers how, many years ago, Yui tried to make a white Christmas happen with the help of pillow stuffing. Now, they main cast gets together to enjoy Christmas dinner together and exchange presents. This episode just tells a wonderful story of sisterly love. 3. Episode 11 of Lucky☆Star

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2007 - September 2007 "]

At least as charming as the girls from K-On! is the main cast of Lucky☆Star. Care to find out how they spend the last days of their year? Trying to sum up everything that happens in this special is a hard task. Lucky Star episodes are a crazy mixture of lots of different events and conversations going on, all held together by the four friends. Their Christmas is shaped by studying for exams, comparing bust sizes, exchanging presents and talks about Christmas cakes and Santa Claus. Maybe it is the fact that this episode first aired in June instead of December that didn’t make it feel forced. It perfectly ties in with the rest of the show and feels like any other episode - with a little bit more holiday feelings and fun. A must-watch for fans of the show and viewers who like to see some innocent Christmas fun.

Lucky Star

2. Episode 22 of Kimi ni Todoke (Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You)

kiminitodoke
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2009 - March 2010 "]

Those of you that have already watched Kimi ni Todoke will certainly remember their Christmas episode. Everyone else should definitely check it out. Sawako’s class is holding a Christmas party and even though she would love to join, she feels obligated to spend the day with her family. Instead, she makes Christmas presents for Chizuru and Ayane as well as - of course - Kazehaya. Just as she has given up on actually getting to spend the day with her friends, a small Christmas miracle happens. It’s hard to describe this episode as anything less than just heartwarming. It is a romantic Christmas story with a beautiful illuminated and snowy setting. Not only that, but we also see Sawako growing up and letting go of her parents. Just like some previous recommendations, this episode sets the beginning for a beautiful ending of the whole show.

1. Toradora! episode 19

Toradora1
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008 - March 2009 "]

Last but not least we have another Christmas story with the unlikely couple of Toradora!. The Christmas party is finally here and the main cast gets caught up in a love triangle. While Ryuuji tries to cheer up Taiga in a Bear Santa Claus costume he still has feelings for Minori. Taiga tries her best to support him, but soon has to realize that she doesn’t want him to leave her side. How will their story turn out? What made this episode so special to me is, again, the fact that it doesn’t feel forced. In fact, the previous two episodes already revolved around the preparations for the Christmas party and the storyline keeps moving forward steadily. Viewers will get more than just one Christmas episode that immediately leads back to the normal setting. Instead, you get to see how Ryuuji and Taiga spend their holidays together and how their love story finally takes a turn.

Punch Line

Slapstick humour is one of the key elements of Anime comedy. It brings out our inner sadist and can even bring life to a dreary show. All the more if it involves blood! Honestly, what could be better than seeing the protagonist make a fool out of himself, especially if he’s making a move on our waifus (serves them right, hahaha). So if your day is like a loli’s chest (flat and boring) and you’re in need of a pick-me-up, fret not friend! For here is a list of our top 10 anime nosebleeds, to make you feel much better ‘cause someone else has it worse!

This is the story of our favourite orphan ninja from the Hidden Leaf village who, despite his seeming lack of talent, is the host of the nine-tailed fox and holds immense power. One of the biggest and most popular manga and anime series ever, the story follows his journey as he chases his dream of becoming the Hokage. There is no real need to explain Naruto’s best nosebleeds, as we all know his infamous sexy-no-jutsu and its many victims. Just in case, lets recap. The sexy-no-jutsu is a move that is aimed at defeating an opponent by nosebleed. The ninja transforms into a naked girl, making the opponent nosebleed so much that he can’t fight! Needless to say, the sheer length of the anime gives rise to more epic nosebleeds than you can count!

Great animation, an incredible script and wonderful characters, the show lives up to it’s hype! A key element of the show is it’s in-your-face fanservice. However, one day, a choice he makes on his way home from school causes a mysterious, beautiful young girl to fall from the sky, changing his life forever. Despite being a classic harem anime full of cute girls, high school puppy love and awkward situations, Noucome’s comedy factor is exceedingly high. Slap stick humour drives much of the plot and no doubt, nosebleeds receive VIP treatment. They happen so often, ecchi situations don’t even need to be present!

Probably the most popular anime to ever be produced, our story follows Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy that defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked heartless man who ransacks villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder. Exciting adventures, meeting new and intriguing people, and finding the legendary treasure One Piece, are his reasons of becoming a pirate. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, the Pirate King Gol D Roger, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach One Piece. With a wide variety of characters and over 700 episodes, One Piece shows no signs of stopping. A great story balanced with well-timed comedic moments, it hosts one of the biggest nosebleeds of all time. After years of not seeing a single woman, Sanji, the cook of Luffy’s crew soon finds himself in a mermaid harem. Pressed against the bosoms of one of the oceanic beauties, his pent-up manliness bursts forth in a nosebleed fountain that is visible for miles.

The story centers around a boy named Akihisa Yoshii, who is in the worst class, and his classmates as they battle tests, love, friendship, in an all out war for school supremacy! A true comedy classic, the anime goes all out in the nosebleed gags. For the first time, characters actually need emergency blood transfusions! This series is a sequel that begins to explore and explain the relationships between some of the background characters from the original series. It’s a drama that follows a group of young people and their separate romantic conflicts. Himura Yuu is a dedicated student, and his academic career is the main focus of his life, while Kuze Shuichii appears to be a womanizer. However, each of them meets a woman that will change everything for them, turning their respective worlds upside down. In typical Japanese Christmas spirit, the couples in the show are spending the holiday with their respective love interests. This is also the finale of the series, and is so full of emotionally charged holiday moments it is hard to choose just one. Though Kuze shares intimate moments with his love Mizuki, one of the most beautiful moments from this episode is when Yuu and his childhood love Yuko watch the sunrise together.

Taiga pushes Ryuuiji away from her because he has feelings for someone else, while Ryuuiji gets his heart broken by that other person. The stone cold Taiga even breaks down in tears at one point. Neither Yuudai nor Chizuru have had a lot of luck with romance in the past. These two are certainly romantically challenged, and at the onset of their story it looks very unlikely that things will work out for the two of them. On Christmas Day, Yuudai gets a gift for Chizuru, but instead of the rabbit he expected it to be, it's a miniature donkey. The donkey runs away, and Chizuru gives chase to it, leaving Yuudai alone. After a hectic series of coincidences that ensue, including a near death experience, Chizuru leaves Yuudai a note telling him how she feels, and he runs to reunite with her. Whether he is able to confess his feelings or not is implicit, as they unite and the credits roll, but this touching scene certainly leaves the viewer with a more optimistic outlook on the couple's future.

After a short fight against a giant creeper vine, Roger gives Dorothy a birthday present (though it wasn’t really her birthday), and what’s even more surprising, she gives him a Christmas gift. How considerate of her! However, that shallow exchange of gifts (despite being a thoughtful gesture, it felt empty and lacking meaning or emotion) is not what makes this Christmas special. What makes this Christmas so merry is Oliver and Laura’s unconditional love for each other. In the last scene, he tells her he doesn’t have a gift for her, and she answers that her gift is being with him. Those who seem to be poorer are certainly the richest, on a Christmas full of love.

Tomoya then buys her a present and he reveals his joy for spending Christmas alone with her for their first time. I find this short scene to be extremely romantic and touching, especially when you know all the trials they had to endure to be together and as happy as they are. In Japan, Christmas is very much related to lovers and this particular scene is all about being happy next to one’s significant other. A Christmas with that kind of love is certainly the merriest.

The episode reaches its climax when Ranma manages to escape from the girls chasing him and gets some alone time with Akane. They get past their differences and exchange gifts. Akane’s gift for Ranma is a hideous scarf she made herself, but Ranma appreciates the thought behind it and puts it on to make her happy. While sports anime has been around for quite some time there has recently been a resurgence in the genre particularly among young females. While the animation and action of the game can get anyone’s heart pounding it isn’t the game that gets these fans all riled up, it’s what happens off the court. Team sports produce strong bonds among teammates due to their united goal of winning, but sometimes these relationships can come off as something way more…intimate and this is what continues to draw women back to the sports genre. The tiny teases that stoke the flames of yaoi fans everywhere. Haikyuu!! is unique in that its characters certainly fit the typical otome game stereotypes (megane, shouta, etc…), BUT it is rare that there are any obvious interactions that would suggest these men are in any sort of relationship with each other. THUS it is up to the fans to decide how to interpret each scene giving women’s imaginations full reign.

captcha HaikyuuYaoiMoments Haikyu 1

In the Haikyuu!! fandom there are generally several different pairings that are pretty popular such as Kageyama x Hinata, Oikawa x Iwaizumi, and Kuroo x Kenma. At Winter Comiket 87 a poll was made and the top ten pairings consisted of:

1. Kageyama x Hinata 2. Oikawa x Iwaizuma 3. Kuroo x Kenma 4. Kageyama x Suga 5. Asahi x Nishinoya 6. Oikawa x Kageyama 7. Kuroo x Tsukishima 8. Bokuto x Akaashi 9. Daichi x Suga 10. Iwaizumi x Oikawa

Now what are the basis for each of these pairings? Well, the subtle interactions between characters in the show. Some of the most popular scenes will be covered in this article to give a little more insight (and squeeee moments) to those who are new to the genre.

After Hinata’s epic failure in his first and only game with this middle school team, he vows to wipe the floor with Kageyama, his newfound rival he met during the tournament. His goal is Kurasuno, the school whose team got him into volleyball in the first place. On his first day of club activities though, everything begins to unravel as he discovers Kageyama in the gym as well. Now he must turn his ultimate rival into a team mate and his best chance of success. What Fujoshi Sees: The relationship between the two is one typical of romantic relationships. Rivals hating each other, but eventually come together to create something amazing and most of the time end up falling for each other so it is no wonder that this pairing is the most popular not to mention that these two are the main characters of the story. The fighting Hinata and Kageyama endure against each other can almost be seen as an elderly married couple. They spend so much time together perfecting their techniques in order to work together that their relationship draws even closer together. They spend NIGHTS together practicing and DAYS together arguing and practicing more. Perhaps they are practicing more than just setting and spiking?

2. Kageyama asks Tsukishima for Academic Help (Season 2)

captcha HaikyuuYaoiMoments Haikyu 3

When Kurasuno are invited to join a training camp in Tokyo by Nekonoma, everyone is super excited to try out their techniques against potential powerhouse schools. The only problem is that passing grades on their finals are required or they will be forced to miss out due to make up exams. Kageyama and Hinata aren’t doing so well academically due to their constant focus on the game. What makes matters worse is they are terrible at studying! Drastic measure must be taken and so Kageyama is forced to beg Tsukishima for help. Hinata drags Kageyama down the street in order to bow to Tsukishima who derives great pleasure from Kageyama’s…submission. What Fujoshi Sees: This entire scene has sparks flying everywhere. Kageyama has almost taken a tsundere role the way he blushes as he bows. The reluctance in his voice is just priceless. Even better, Tsukishima’s smugness gives the whole scene an added citric flavor. It seems that perhaps Tsukishima will give Kageyama a more HANDS ON approach.

3. Nishinoya Won’t Rejoin the Team (Season 1)

captcha HaikyuuYaoiMoments Haikyu 4

After freeing himself from juvenile hall, the libero Nishinoya finds himself in a bit of a predicament. Kurasuno’s star, Ace Asahi, has refused to rejoin the team after some bad experiences with blockers. As a result, Nishinoya has also refused to rejoin the team in solidarity with Asahi. Nishinoya looks up to Asahi and therefore refuses to play on a team without him. Nishinoya is utterly devoted to him and it’s quite touching. Eventually, he comes around and decides that it’s better to give Asahi his fighting spirit back then to let him continue to sulk. What Fujoshi Sees: Nishinoya is loyal to a fault as a good lover usually is. When Hinata and Kageyama begin to question Nishinoya about Asahi, he begins to light up while describing Asahi. Even in season two, this pair can constantly be found practicing together…alone. Once volleyball is over with, I’m sure they will continue to “practice”.

4. Kageyama and Hinata Fight About a New Quick (Season 2)

captcha HaikyuuYaoiMoments Haikyu-5

These two can’t seem to get agree on much most of the time, but that is what makes them the most satisfying pairing of the series. In season two, Hinata is desperate to break out of his stagnant state and wants Kageyama’s help doing it. Kageyama reluctantly agrees to throw Hinata some tosses in order to pacify him. In the end, Hinata is unable to hit a single ball with his eyes open which forces Kageyama to snap and declare his opinion was the correct one. Hinata disagrees and the two devolve into a fist fight on the floor. Kageyama clearly fighting to keep Hinata safe from failure and upset that Hinata cannot see this. What Fujoshi Sees: Eventually the fight is broken up via dual punches to the face, but before this everyone gets to see the two rolling around on the floor together in a mass of limbs. Each one is passionate about the other. Hinata believes he can be successful with Kageyama and Kageyama only wants to protect Hinata from disappointment. Each of them truly care about the other and seeing them become PHYSICALLY involved with each other is just icing on the cake.

5. Tsukishima Gets Yelled at by Yamaguchi (Season 2)

captcha HaikyuuYaoiMoments Haikyu-6

While the entire team is putting their all into individual practice, Tsukishima seems to be the loner of the group. Even when he is invited by the Aces from two other teams to practice he turns down the offer in a dismissive manner claiming that, “This is only a club.” His brother’s past failures have affected him severely and so therefore he puts forth only the minimal amount of effort into the game so as not to get hurt. As he begins to realize he is being left in the dust he retreats more into himself believing that it is inevitable that Hinata will outshine him. While Tsukishima has been sulking, Yamaguchi has been keeping a watchful eye on his best friend to the point of stalking his every move. When he has had enough of Tsukishima wasting his potential, Yamaguchi confronts him outside by yelling out to Tsukishima about how “lame” he is acting. Yamaguchi then begins to describe Tsukishima’s finer points and how he could easily stand on the same ground as Hinata if he put some effort into it. Tsukishima relents and begins to practice harder with the Aces. What Fujoshi Sees: During this entire scene Yamaguchi’s face is priceless. He’s shaking and blushing as he’s never had to cheer on his stronger best friend before. He cherishes their friendship and only wants to see his Tsukishima succeed. The two are constantly together so Yamaguchi knows Tsukishima best. The fact that his pep talk worked even when others had tried and failed only solidifies the strong bonds they have for each other. The two even walk home TOGETHER to “study”.

Closing

While all of these pairings are the product of female fans’ overactive imaginations, the writers make sure to stoke the flames by drawing in slight blushes and embarrassing scenes every so often. These small morsels only make the flames get hotter in the fandom, which is something absolutely wonderful. While there are plenty more juicy scenes through the first two seasons of Haikyuu!! there are also plenty more to come.

The space opera. A genre defined by manly men fighting in robots attempting to save the world from evil forces only to return to a nice girl awaiting them on their home planet. The mech battles draw the men and the elaborate tales of love and drama bring the women to watch a very old genre. One of the genre’s signature series, Gundam, has been running for almost forever with a different reincarnation airing almost every new anime season, even sometimes overlapping another Gundam series. A testament to how successful the franchise has been thus far. In the new series Iron-Blooded Orphans the usual romance plot is spiced up quite a bit. A mercenary group operated by children decides to revolt against the adults who treat them like garbage and form their own mercenary group, Tekkadan. Their first mission is to escort the diplomat Kudelia from Mars to Earth so that she may plead for human rights. While the plot sounds typical enough, the group is filled solely of boys and men and many have never been around anyone of the opposite sex besides Biscuit’s sisters and Atra, who clearly has a thing for Mikazuki. Because of this, the series is dripping with sexual undertones. Everyone is blushing, every word said has a double meaning, and every main character has that ONE special someone that is thought about constantly. Pure. Yaoi. Bliss.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Moment #1: A Confession?! (Episode 6)

Image 1 Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

After Tekkadan’s original guide betrayed them Orga decides to reach out to Teiwaz, a group that is well known to be a syndicate. As Orga heads to Teiwaz’s headquarters, Biscuit confronts him about the dangers of doing so. Biscuit questions Orga on whether or not he is choosing the dangerous path on purpose or not. Orga then dives into full out confession mode. He admits that he believes he must do this in order to move forward, but the kicker is because he believes Mikazuki’s eyes are all on him. Orga then continues to gush about Mikazuki saying that, “He’s strong, cool, and has courage. He mastered a Mobile Suit in his first battle, and now reads and writes.” Orga then admits that he cannot “betray those eyes”. He always has to “be the coolest Orga Itsuka”. Has anyone been as blindly in love as Orga is?! He’s doing this all for Mikazuki! He truly admires Mikazuki and it shows considering the two hardly need to say a word for them to understand each other. Their bond is unbreakable. They talk about each other as if they are in awe of the other’s presence. It is absolutely adorable. The two really need to sort themselves out so that everyone can have a good old fashioned nose bleed.

Moment #2: Getting Drunk and Letting out Secrets (Episode 9)

Image 2 Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

After earning quite a bit of money from selling parts stolen from Gjallarhorn, Orga decides to give his crew the much needed downtime they have been looking for. For the young ones, he brings back all sorts of delicacies and sweets that would otherwise be out of reach for children of poverty, but for the “adults” he has something much better planned. Orga takes everyone out to a nice izakaya to drink and eat to their hearts’ content although Orga is the one who ends up completely smashed. The next scene cuts to Orga leaning over a balcony, sick as hell. The only one there to help him is Mikazuki as he gently rubs Orga’s back. This scene is absolutely adorable! It isn’t often that Orga’s more sensitive and vulnerable side is seen and to see Mikazuki step up and be the strong one in this situation is icing on the cake. Orga’s face is completely red with a blush even after Mikazuki has enlisted the help of the others to carry Orga back. In fact, the scene even gets better. In his passed out state Orga whispers, “I can finally make a family for you.” It’s quite obvious who he’s talking about (*cough* Mikazuki*cough*. While no family in the traditional sense, Tekkadan is definitely a loving and caring family. As a side note, Akihiro is carrying Orga.

Moment #3: Not Interested in Women (Episode 9)

Image 3 Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

During Orga’s party many of the men ate and drank their fill, but a small group couldn’t help but wonder if the celebration could be improved upon by adding some women to the mix. The group enthusiastically agrees. Or rather all but one agrees. Akihiro shyly looks to the side and states that he doesn’t understand what the big idea is. The group begins teasing them and the scene is cut short early leaving the audience confused. While the scene is quite short, it opens up a giant can of worms. Does Akihiro just not understand women because he’s technically a “child” or does he just not PREFER women? It’s safe to assume most fans will gravitate to the latter, but the question is WHO is he paired with?! Mikazuki and Orga seem to be a pretty solid pair so far, but Mikazuki and Akihiro DO train together…alone. Shirtless. In a room with beds. Could this possibly be a love triangle? THERE MUST BE MORE.

[ad_middle]

Moment #4: Only One Left Out (Episode 10)

Image 4 Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

The scene begins with a message from Tekkadan’s accountant back on Mars explaining that everything is well back on the home front to Biscuit, Eugene, Norba, and Orga. Orga dismisses Biscuit so that he may receive his own personal messages from his sisters in private. Eugene immediately exclaims that he would “rather receive a message from a woman” than from family. Norba teases Eugene by saying he’d rather have a woman in front of him than long distance because he loves the physical aspects of a woman best. Eugene exclaims that it’s the emotional aspect of a relationship with a woman that is best. Norba then throws Eugene under the bus, wondering how Eugene could possibly know anything after having his first experience just days prior. Eugene seeks backup in Orga, but is left hanging as Orga explains that he doesn’t “care much about women.” A small blush forms on Orga’s cheeks. Eugene presses the issue further stating that a man must know a woman to become a “true man”. Eugene and Norba continue their antics while Orga looks away and exclaims that he “doesn’t care” because he has a family. Orga, while carrying the physical traits of a man still has the mentality of a child. Of course he isn’t interested in women when he has Mikazuki in the wings. He can say he cares about his family more than his personal life, but clearly he is confusing romantic feelings with familial love. There is one other character in recent anime that has done this and I believe his name is Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club. While Orga needs to sort out his feelings for Mikazuki, all the fans will continue to watching him cutely stumble over his own feet when faced with the idea of love. There has to be a happy ending somewhere…though it is a Gundam series.

Moment #5: Norba and Yamagi (Episode 7)

Image 5 Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

Yamagi maintains many of the Mobile Workers, but there is just one that he gravitates to in particular. As Tekkadan prepares to take on the enemy, Yamagi preps Norba’s machine. As thanks Norba reaches out to grab Yamagi’s hand. Yamagi hesitates until Norba grabs a hold and then pulls Yamagi from the cockpit, leaving him stunned. Yamagi looks down at his hand and forms a fist. The scene is brief, but is a special moment shared between the two. For a while Yamagi has seemed to pay special attention to Norba, but this scene really seals the deal on how Yamagi truly feels for the older man. In fact, this scene is one of the rare ones that actually shows really canon feelings from one character and it is super cute. Yamagi’s look of astonishment for being recognized by Norba forces butterflies into the stomachs of everyone watching. Since these two are minor characters they don’t get much screen time, but the audience is still rooting for them!

undam Iron Blooded Orphans wallpaper 2

Conclusion

While the series never overtly shows any physical contact or states anything blatantly, the idea of these relationships blossoming off screen can sometimes be more tantalizing than giving fan girls what they want. Even better is the idea of manly men on a giant ship succumbing to their secret desires between the sheets. The series isn’t over so perhaps these relationships still have a chance to come to fruition. Only time will tell. Until then, speculation fanfiction will always be there for comfort.

Tiger and Bunny: Yaoi/BL-esque Moments [Best Scenes]

Tiger and Bunny wallpaper 2

Introduction

Despite its trappings as an action-buddy anime, Tiger and Bunny offers an ample barrage of fujoshi fodder between its title characters that has fueled countless volumes of doujinshi and sustained the series since its 2011 debut. Debates on the Internet still continuing between the merits and demerits of Kotetsu/Barnaby or Barnaby/Kotetsu, and with a Hollywood film in the works, these conversations are likely to continue for many years to come. For the uninitiated to this anime, Tiger and Bunny is not the typical good-versus-bad hero show as a series that questions our notions of justice in a world dominated by multi-million dollar corporations and the media. In this show’s universe, certain people called NEXT are born with super powers. A handful of these NEXT become “Heroes,” or in other words, fighters of justice sponsored by corporations and filmed for national television. Yet, dark secrets shroud this mediated justice, secrets soon to be discovered by the new Hero combo, Wild Tiger, aka Kaburagi T. Kotetsu, and Barnaby Brooks Jr., aka Bunny. In this lull before the Tiger and Bunny’s Hollywood film, what’s a fujoshi leaning fan to do but ship the heck out of existing television series and build new fantasies from the existing fan service-y framework. The following is a short list of the top five shippable moments from Tiger and Bunny. Rather than a comprehensive exploration on the intimate relationship between Kotetsu and Barnaby, this list will be more of a sampler platter to entice those who have yet to partake in this delightful series. As a fair warning though, there will be spoilers. Now, let’s jump right into the top five BL/Yaoi moments in Tiger and Bunny.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1st Moment: The Infamous Princess Carry

  • Episodes: 1

Starting off with episode 1, we have the “infamous princess carry,” or in other words the scene that kicks off the potential romance between Kotetsu and Barnaby. We witness this scene in a critical moment in Kotetsu’s life. As a hero just a little past his prime, Kotetsu has had more than his fair share of close calls; episode one best showcases this as Kotetsu, after haphazardly fulfilling his role as a hero, falls mid-air when his five-minute long “Hundred Power” expires. Covering his eyes in fear of the expected impact, Kotetsu suddenly finds himself cradled in the arms of a yet unidentified rookie hero, Barnaby.

Tiger and Bunny capture Image 1

Though only brief, this first “princess carry” cements what will become a motif that bookends the series with elements suggestive of boys love. For those with fujoshi glasses, this foreshadows Kotetsu falling for Barnaby and vice versa. Despite the odd couple bickering that shortly ensues after their first encounter, from the very start Kotetsu and Barnaby’s relationship appears to portend more than that typical co-workers.

2nd Moment: “Why do you bother with me,” aka The Turning Point

  • Episodes: 8

Moving on from their first encounter, we have the key point that signifies Barnaby’s heart softening to Kotetsu’s constant attention. From the first episode, differences in personality create tension between Barnaby and Kotetsu as they work together as a hero team. Yet, despite these tensions, Kotetsu slowly begins to warm towards Barnaby, attempting to “guide” him as a veteran hero. Barnaby, however, does not take well to Kotetsu’s concern, which brings us to episode 8. In this episode, Kotetsu goes out of his way to protect Barnaby from harm, injuring himself in the process. Upon returning home after witnessing Kotetsu’s sacrifice, Barnaby begins wondering why Kotetsu even bothers with him despite their constant fighting.

Tiger and Bunny capture Image 2

Why indeed. For those watching Tiger and Bunny, Barnaby’s sudden realization of Kotetsu’s care represents what can be interpreted as the beginning of reciprocated feelings between the title characters. Barnaby’s awareness and Kotetsu’s injury starts the ball rolling for the man-to-man bonding that develops in the following episodes.

3rd Moment: The Kotetsu and Barnaby heart to heart…or something more(?)

  • Episodes: 9

Building off of the last episode, episode 9 acts more as a filler episode that mixes a shirtless Kotetsu, a sympathetic and concerned Barnaby, an ample supply of alcohol, and a well-timed scene cut to stimulate plenty of fan service titillation. In this episode, hero duties forces Kotetsu (along with Dragon Kid and the NEXT son of Stern Bild’s mayor) to stay overnight at Barnaby’s apartment. While Dragon Kid actually does work, Kotetsu and Barnaby share a heart to heart moment over a couple of drinks that, in the following scene cut, leads the two sprawled suggestively in the living room the next morning.

Tiger and Bunny capture Image 3

What exactly occurs that night leaves much to the (romantic or perhaps erotic) imagination. For those familiar with Tiger and Bunny doujinshi and fan art, you’ve probably seen your fair share of this scene; for the uninitiated, be prepared to relive this memorable and shippable scene.

4th Moment: “I believed you would trust me”

  • Episodes: 13

Shippable moments in Tiger and Bunny do not only appear in filler episodes. They are permeate critical plot points in the series, as can be seen in episode 13, the climax of the first cour. Right up until this point, Kotetsu and Barnaby’s relationship slightly sours as Stern Bild faces potential destruction with the sudden appearance of Jake Martinez, a serial killer who appears to be responsible for the death of Barnaby’s parents. The source of the trouble between Kotetsu and Barnaby resides in an issue of trust: Barnaby begins to think Kotetsu does not believe in him. As such, Barnaby turns his back on Kotetsu.

Tiger and Bunny capture Image 4

But, even with his back against Kotetsu, Kotetsu is still there to catch his fall, as in the key scene in which Kotetsu, despite having life threatening injuries, runs to Barnaby to tell him how to defeat Jake Martinez during a fate deciding battle between the two. To understand the full impact of this scene, one truly has to see it. However, to best summarize it, this scene and episode 13 as a whole illustrates how BL/yaoi moments rely not only on blatant fan service, but also on small emotional moments and the exchange of trust.

5th Moment: And the award for most memorable “dying” words goes to…

  • Episodes: 24

Last but not least, we have the Kotetsu’s “dying” scene in episode 24. Here, in this moment of distress, we see the pinnacle the intimacy between Kotetsu and Barnaby. While it is not sealed with a kiss, it is reinforced with an admission from Barnaby that he has been learning to cook fried rice for Kotetsu. Paired with heart wrenching music and a tearful Barnaby, it would be difficult to not view this scene romantic for those with fujoshi vision.

Tiger and Bunny capture Image 5

Again, like the admission of trust in episode 13, we find that BL/yaoi stimulating scenes depend not only on (erotic) representations of the male body, but also that of more human, heartfelt elements such as trust, friendship, and (at times interpreted) love.

Tiger and Bunny wallpaper 1

Conclusion

With hopes, this list has highlighted the best shippable moments in Tiger and Bunny. Through Kotetsu and Barnaby’s bond, we can see that what can be viewed as boys love scenes in anime relies not so much on the representation of the “boy,” but rather on that of love. As this is only a brief list of highlights in Tiger and Bunny, many other shippable scenes have been neglected. Please feel free to list your favorite scenes from Tiger and Bunny in the comment section below!

BL/Yaoi Moments in 07-Ghost [Best Scenes]

07-GHOST wallpaper

Aired in Summer 2009, 07-Ghost is an adaptation of a manga with the same title by Amemiya Yuki and Ichihara Yukino. The fact that its demographic aim was geared towards women, at first, would make some people tilt their head in confusion, considering 07-Ghost’s genre is a crossing between military and fantasy, with a lot of shounen-like battles thrown in especially in the anime. But here is a reason why: there is nothing that’s more blown up in 07-Ghost like its bromance relationship—it’s a shipping paradise for those who like their anime with some dash of BL hints! The anime only covered the early chapters of the manga and sadly doesn’t have a second season—which is a shame, because 07-Ghost is definitely one of Studio DEEN’s most enjoyable anime to watch. Here are ten selections of BL-hinted moments in 07-Ghost; some of which, for your information, is really not subtle at all. But for now, let’s go back to the very first episode and trace the scenes that lacks subtlety in its BL hints.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 1
[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Moment #1: A promise to die together (Episode 1)

The whole episode one, basically, is dedicated to establish how important Mikage and Teito are to one another. As the two prepared for the graduation exam, it was clear that they were inseparable, and that Mikage was Teito’s only friend, considering how sulky and cold Teito was to people. All of that, though, pales in comparison to the night before their graduation exam, where Teito was being honest for once and thanking Mikage for being the one who taught him what it might have felt to have a family, to which Mikage responded with tears and stating a promise: They will never abandon one another in the battlefield. If the gods permit it, they will die together. Teito welcomes the vow and bumps their fists together.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 2

Not stopping there, the Mikage/Teito hints continues all throughout the episode; on the night after they both passed the graduation exam, after their short conversation about how terrifying Ayanami was, Mikage climbed over the top bunk of their beds and decided to sleep together with Teito—to which Teito only half-heartedly complained. So they shared the bed—a bunk bed, mind you, which is obviously tiny for two teenage boys. Good things don’t last forever though. Episode one ends with Teito having to run away from the academy, and of course, Mikage came to help, even if Teito didn’t wish to involve him in this. Hand-in-hand, illuminated by the moonlight, the two tore through the hallways to where Mikage had prepared a Hawkzile for Teito to get out, and through everything, Teito could only make one wish: God, if you’re really there, please protect Mikage.

Moment #2: Follow the path of light (Episode 5)

Finding a sanctuary in the Seventh District Church after the Bishops saved him from falling to his death, Teito brooded as he contemplated his rediscovered memories, what he should do next, whether he was endangering the entire church by staying, and how Mikage was doing. Shockingly, as Teito entertained the thought of leaving the church, it was Mikage himself who suddenly appeared before him, safe and sound even if he looked extremely tired. Ecstatic to find Teito, though, Mikage literally threw himself forward and hugged Teito tight in a true shoujo-style. Amusingly enough, in the manga, this little scene is followed by a little panel of Frau commenting, “Is that his boyfriend?”

07 Ghost captcha Picture 3

This is where you should have your tissues ready, though, because all throughout the episode, we could see that Mikage is not okay. Labrador even remarked that he was “the one who would destroy Teito’s world.” Teito, on the other hand, was simply worried about what Mikage must have gone through ever since they were separated, to which Mikage only give dismissive answers. The highlight of the episode though, is the night they spent together, where Teito decided to tell Mikage everything—the memories he’d rediscovered, his status as a Raggs Prince, and how his father was killed by Ayanami. Mikage, reassuring that he believed Teito, then crossed the space between their beds and put his hands on Teito’s shoulders, and told him the words that would later be the starting point of Teito’s entire journey: Don’t take revenge. Follow the path of light. Dumbfounded, Teito’s eyes were clearly scared afterwards—Mikage’s words, to him, sounded like a goodbye.

Moment #3: I love you, Teito (Episode 8)

Make sure you have your tissues ready for this scene. What began with a peaceful scene of Teito and Mikage hanging out in the garden and looking a lot like they were on a date, quickly spiraled down to one of the most painful scenes in the anime, beginning with Teito noticing how cold Mikage’s hand was when he took his hand to help him up. And in the background, ominously, Labrador murmured about how Mikage only had half of his soul now, and he would soon disappear. Unknown to anyone else, Mikage had been branded with Ayanami’s curse, the other half of his soul had been taken hostage as he was forced to choose between bringing his younger sister or Teito in front of Ayanami. If he couldn’t choose, Mikage would die. Faced with such a choice, Mikage held on until the last of his soul remained, and when he couldn’t anymore, he made his last request to Teito: Kill him, before Ayanami take over his body and kill Teito himself. Shocked and appalled, Teito absolutely refused to do so. Resigned to his fate, Mikage stares at Teito sadly and says, “I love you, Teito,” using the word “suki”, which was quite often used between friends. Much later, though, Labrador rectified this, saying that Mikage did everything because Mikage loved Teito, this time using the word “aishiteimashita”, which signifies a deeper love usually used for family and actual lovers. And so, for the last time, Mikage tells Teito, “Goodbye.”

Moment #4: Goodbye (Episode 9)

What is the most heartbreaking scene in the anime might as well be the most intimate and the most beautiful Mikage/Teito scene in the entire series. In the midst of Teito’s battle with Ayanami, who had taken over Mikage’s body completely, Frau arrived as Zehel, intent to protect Teito and save Mikage, and managed to trap Ayanami inches away from his scythe. Teito, who had just released the Eye of Mikhail and only had just come back to himself, scrambled over to Zehel and begged him to save Mikage, only for Ayanami to taunt him before pushing the scythe through Mikage’s body, effectively slaying what was left of Mikage’s soul. Not knowing this, Teito saw that Mikage was back—smiling towards him, and he ran. Reminded of their promise to die together, Teito threw himself into Mikage’s waiting arms, and the two embraced in the midst of blinding light and bursts of feathers. Mikage smiled, heartbreakingly wide and bright, and for a moment, Teito smiled, too, caling Mikage’s name with a voice filled with hope.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 4

Except that was Mikage’s last smile, and he disappeared into the light in Teito’s arms. Teito was broken completely, and the audience were given a glimpse of their days in military school together, adding salt to the wound as Teito was shown curled up in bed clutching Mikage’s uniform jacket, his last thought reverberating in the scene: “Mikage was my light.”

Moment #5: Picking up the pieces (Episode 9)

Throughout the heartbreak of Mikage’s death, on his own unique way, Frau stayed by Teito’s side. He picked up Teito, bridal-style, back to his room after the battle that took Mikage’s life, listened to Teito’s recounting of his and Mikage’s history together, and was also the person who broke through the door to make Teito eat when the other bishops and sisters were hesitating in front of Teito’s door. He comforted Teito, telling him the legend of the Chief of Heaven and how each human was given three wishes, and when those wishes had all been granted, said human had to go back to the Chief of Heaven.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 5

But ultimately, it was Frau who brought a Fyulong dragon for Teito—a tiny pink bundle of fur with a scar in the shape of an X that turns out to be Mikage’s reincarnation. Frau had, apparently, looked very hard for Mikage’s reincarnation—“like he was dying,” or so Labrador remarked—for Teito’s sake. Of course, Frau being Frau, he completely breaks the touching moment by accidentally letting the contract collar Ayanami had put on Teito bit his finger and, consequently, making a contract and becoming Teito’s Master—if they don’t meet for the whole 48 hours, the collar would explode. If you haven’t been snorting at the unsubtle BL hints before this, you would probably be snorting hard enough to choke on air by now. Even the reborn Mikage was clearly jealous of this, openly biting Frau and trying to fry him with the tiny fireball from his mouth. Cute.

[ad_middle]

Moment #6 Once more, by your side (Episode 9)

Speaking of the cute baby Fyulong dragon Frau brought back for Teito—this tiny, pink ball of fur that later becomes the mascot for the series itself is Mikage’s reincarnation, widely known amongst fans more as Burupya rather than his namesake. Despite its cuteness and how it could only say “Burupya!” most of the times, its arrival was ironically making the scene even more painful, as the audience was shown how angry and pained Teito was after Mikage’s death. Refusing Frau’s words of comfort and cursing the gods for not saving Mikage, Teito was snapped out of his grief by the tiny Fyulong dragon resting in his hands, and Frau’s words of, “He’s already back by your side.” He notices the x-shaped scar that Burupya has, and begins calling it Mikage, letting the baby dragon lick away his tears as he breaks down completely, and Castor remarked that for sure, Mikage is saying that from now on too, he’ll be by Teito’s side, facing happiness and sadness together. Over Teito’s shoulder, the shadow of Mikage appeared, hands circling Teito’s head in a protective, fond gesture.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 6

Cute.

Moment #7: Friends (Episode 14 & 19)

The presence of Hakuren Oak, Teito’s partner in the Bishop Examination he’d decided to take for Mikage’s sake, was in a lot of ways filling the hole that Mikage left. Not to mention that Burupya obviously approved of his and Teito’s friendship. After bits of Hakuren and Teito slowly discovering things about one another—Hakuren accidentally finding out that Teito was a former sklave, and Teito realizing that Hakuren isn’t just a haughty noble kid—they became closer and, after a particular attack by a Wars, Hakuren finally offered a hand in friendship. Teito, terrified that he would not be able to protect Hakuren and would lose him the way he did Mikage, refused. Later though, as they walked together, Teito told Hakuren that he’d become stronger, and when he was strong enough to protect Hakuren, he’d like to be Hakuren’s friend. To this, Hakuren called him an idiot, and hid a fond smile. But it doesn’t end there. As both Hakuren and Teito got involved in the incident with the Arch Bishop Bastian, in which Teito was badly injured and was only saved by the release of the Eye of Mikhail and Zehel’s timely intervention, Hakuren had to face the Eye of Mikhail directly as Teito remained unconscious. Even knowing Teito’s complicated situation, Hakuren didn’t hesitate to state that he’s on Teito’s side. Upon opening his eyes to see Hakuren for the first time after the battle, Teito throws himself forward and hugs Hakuren tight, relieved that Hakuren is okay.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 7

The touching heart-to-heart conversation that followed was another proof that they’ve become very good friends in the short time they’d spent together—very good friends that, perhaps, could grow into something more.

Moment #8: What is important (Episodes 19 & 20)

“Dying isn’t so bad, as long as it was by your hands,” is the comment Frau made to Teito when he joined the battle with the Arch Bishop Bastian. Furious by Frau’s making light of his own life and death situation, the first thing Teito does upon seeing him after regaining consciousness is punching him in the face. And then proceeded to climb on top of Frau, and yelled about how stupid and selfish Frau was—because he was the one who told Teito to keep living on after Mikage’s death. Driven to tears at the idea of taking Frau’s life away, Teito told him to go die by his own hands if Frau wanted to die. Frau, as usual, refused to be honest when it came to Teito. Instead, he lightly answered that he liked Teito’s soul, and thus he wouldn’t mind if Teito killed him, causing Teito to blush adorably before running away. Later, though, when Frau went to save Teito and Hakuren from Ayanami, he chose to catch a falling Teito with his Hawkzile instead of the Eye of Mikhail. Teito, furious for being unable to avenge Mikage and now losing the Eye of Mikhail as well, yelled at Frau for not catching the Eye of Mikhail, and Frau pulled him close, pressed Teito into his arms and told him that he knew what is important to him, and it wasn’t the Eye of Mikhail. This was only the beginning of Frau and Teito’s growing close relationship—in which the manga elaborates much better and in detail, as they later embarked in a journey together to unveil all the mysteries surrounding Barsburg and Raggs, as well as the story behind 07-Ghosts.

Moment #9: I’m glad you’re okay (Episodes 20 & 25)

Having been taken alongside Teito by Ayanami, Hakuren was saved Frau. Once they all landed their Hawkziles safely, Hakuren ran over to where Teito was, worried about his friend’s safety. Teito, still upset about his failure to avenge Mikage and losing the Eye of Mikhail, spoke words that belittle himself, but Hakuren instead throws his arms around Teito and hugged him in relief, and said, “I am glad you’re okay.” The words brought a smile upon Teito’s lips.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 8

Hakuren and Teito then proceeded to go through their Bishop Examination together, being partners throughout the whole exam and passed the exam together. At the very end when the exam, the imperial army invaded the church, which prompted Frau to take Teito and run away. On their way out, they bumped into Hakuren, relying the news to Teito that he passed the exam, and promised Teito that he’d get stronger so Teito could share his burden with him one day. All Teito could think was how blinding Hakuren was, and he promised to tell Hakuren everything one day. The two joined hands, a symbol of a promised made, and Hakuren told Teito to go.

Moment #10: See you later (Episode 25)

Riding on the back of Frau’s Hawkzile through the secret passageway out of the church, Teito found himself considering his whole journey and where he stood now; the things he’d lost and the things he’d gain, as he’d later state to Frau. If he hadn’t met Mikage, if Frau hadn’t taken him in, if he hadn’t met everyone in the church—and those questions were halted, at the moment, where a shadow of a pale hand reached and took Teito’s own, holding tight, and Teito looked up to see Mikage, pulling him forward.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 9

Telling Teito to go forward to where Teito’s precious place was, Mikage smiled encouragingly. To the Mikage who was always by his side, Teito blinked away the sad smile that he had, and replaced them with determination.

07 Ghost captcha Picture 10

With firm smiles on their faces, the two told each other, “See you later.” Even though Mikage was dead, and was reborn as Burupya, along the course of the series that continues in the manga, Mikage remained a strong presence and reason for Teito to continue moving forward. As was stated later in the manga, Teito thought to Mikage that if he’d gather up his life, then maybe he could become a light that reach Mikage—proving that even as time passed, Teito’s feelings for Mikage did not weaken.

07-GHOST wallpaper 2

Conclusion

07-Ghost gives beautiful relationships between its characters that would easily both melt as well as break your heart, especially if you end up shipping Mikage and Teito. They’re not the only ones, though—Teito has his own share of questionable skinship and/or intimacy with other characters as well, such as Bishop Frau and Hakuren Oak. The manga explores these relationships further, and showed how each of them developed Teito’s character and would later shaped him into the person who was able to make a grave decision that would change the whole world by the end of the manga. The unsubtle BL hints that 07-Ghost has will definitely add to the enjoyment of people who likes such genre. If you’ve seen 07-Ghost and found your ship, which one do you stand by with? Let us know!

10. Kodomo no Jikan OVA
Episode 3: A Child’s Summer Time - “A case of mistaken identity.”

captcha 10. Kodomo no Jikan OAD

The lead male character Aoki Daisuke brought the girls Kokonoe Rin, Usa Mimi, Kagami Kuro, fellow teacher and also love interest, Houin Kyouko, to the countryside to visit Aoki’s family. There, Kyouko meets Daisuke’s younger sister Chika and their mother. Kyouko has an ulterior motive: She is taking this chance to make a good impression that she makes a good wife to Daisuke. After a few rounds of beers with Chika, the two girls got drunk and ended up sleeping in Daisuke’s futon. When Kyouko opened her eyes a bit, she saw Chika sleeping and like any person influenced by alcohol, she mistook Chika as Daisuke and proceeded to have her way with the (un)fortunate country girl. This scene only lasted around 40-ish seconds, but it’s more than enough to see some great yuri in action. Did drunk Kyouko and Chika go all the way? Who knows, but after seeing Chika’s reaction the morning later, I guess they did. “Those metro girls really are freaky!”

09. Fate Kaleid Liner PRISMA ILLYA 2wei Herz!
Episode 02: “Mana transfer”

captcha 09. Fate Kaleid Liner PRISMA ILLYA 2wei Herz!

It’s summer break for Illyasviel von Einzbern aka “Illya and the gang”, so they’re off to buy the most essential thing for summer break: swimsuits! As the girls browsed around the mall for something cute to wear, Kuro is getting weaker and weaker. Kuro took off with Illya to a secluded place to initiate an emergency mana transfer. Chloe von Einzbern aka “Kuro”, needs constant mana to survive and she needs to ‘extract’ mana from other people through kissing or body contact. We’ve seen many scenes of Kuro extracting mana through French kissing many times in the series, but what makes this particular scene special is that it’s funny and one of their friends is spying on them… and she got aroused too. The first part is Kuro is asking Illya to begin in a rather meek, submissive tone, Illya noticed the mood, and then made the mistake of, say, not using the right words. Illya then argued that mana transferring doesn’t need to be done through kissing, and that it can be done through other means. Kuro whispered the other “means” of transfer and Illya turned instantly red. Not sure what Kuro whispered, but I can guess the method involves two pairs of scissors, or petting the cat, or eating tacos… Don’t ask. In the end, the two both engaged in the usual mana transfer with their bewildered friend watching them from afar.

08. Yuru Yuri Season 1
Episode 05: “A counselling session gone (horribly) wrong”

captcha 08. Yuru Yuri Season 1

Yoshikawa Chinatsu is madly in love with her prince-charming-senpai, Funami Yui, and she wants to know more about her. Akaza Akari, Yui’s childhood friend, agreed to help her out. Chinatsu invites Akari to her place during the summer break and spend the day learning everything about Yui. After a series of questions like “who Yui likes, etc.”, Akari asked the question of what Chinatsu wants to do with Yui!? Chinatsu answered, she wants to kiss her and do some rather sexual things to her. Akari, the always concerned friend, followed up with the question that kissing is embarrassing. This led Chinatsu suggesting she needs to practice kissing and… Akari is the only girl around. You may find the whole Chinatsu chasing Akari around the house, grabbing her, pinning her to the floor and forced Akari to touch lips rather offensive, but don’t be. Chinatsu is just a curious girl in love and she’s too young to realize what she did was wrong. Plus the anime handled the scene in a funny way. You’re one sour grape if you don’t see the humor behind it.

07. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!: Kirameki no...
Slapstick Noel OVA: “First kiss”

captcha 07. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! OVA

Instead of going home after a hectic Christmas party at Dekomori Sanae’s house, Togashi Yuuta and Takanashi Rikka went on a scenic cruise in the sea. Yuuta planned this so that he develop his budding relationship with Rikka. Unfortunately, something ruined the mood. Little do they know, Dekomori Sanae, Nibutani Shinka, Tsuyuri Kumin and Isshiki Makoto were tailing them all along. Dekomori, being very close to Rikka, saw the entire thing, got jealous and attacks Yuuta, pleading for him to return Rikka to her. Shinka tried to stop Dekomori, but both of them, Yuuta and Rikka slipped. As Yuuta stops Rikka from falling, their lips come close, the screen goes black and we hear a “chuu” sound. As they come about, the two lovebirds didn’t kiss, but where did the sound come from? As they turned around, they saw Shinka and Dekomori touching lips. This scene happened in an instant but it was very unexpected, and quite frankly, it hyped a lot of people for the second season of the anime. Dekomori is hostile towards Shinka because she believes that Shinka is not the Mori Summer she used to admire, and throughout the series Dekomori wastes no time in making Shinka’s school life a living hell. This kind of love-hate relationship between the two is so palpable, it was only a matter of time for this to happen. And when it happened, it was glorious. Plus it was their first kiss.

06. Sakura Trick
Episode 11: “Steal a kiss”

captcha 06. Sakura Trick

Their cover was blown. Takayama Haruka and Sonoda Yuu were kissing in the hallway and Yuu’s big sister and student council president Sonoda Mitsuki saw the entire thing. Ever since Mitsuki is keeping an eye out for Yuu and our heroine Haruka can longer have her daily kissing with Yuu. To make matters worse, Mitsuki assigned Ikeno Kaede, one of Haruka’s friends, to monitor Yuu and report any unfavorable acts by Haruka. During a dancing lesson, Haruka took this chance to pair up with Haruka, and like a skilled dance professional, Haruka steals a few kisses while at certain angles where the spying eyes of Kaede can’t see. If you’ve seen Sakura Trick, the anime has LOTS of kissing, but this scene is special because it’s not the usual kissing sessions we see. Haruka was so determined to touch lips with Yuu again, that it’s amazing no one saw them, including Kaede.

Asogi Rin is working on a case of grisly murders that are happening throughout the city. Rin knows that the perpetrator is not human and after her leads went cold, she approaches an informant she knew years ago. The informant has the info Rin wants, but she won’t give it easily for such information comes with a high price: sex. This scene came out of nowhere and it’s amusing to see both sides winning. Normally these types of informants ask for a stupid amount of money for their own benefits, and it’s nice to see a different and, uh, “fair” take of it. The scene ends with the informant asking for round 2 by inserting a small vial containing the info in her privates, and Rin has to extract it by means of, uh, you know...

It’s a gift-wrapped Momoka, of course! Urara has the hots for Momoka and she’s the resident pervert and masochist that finds ways to molest Momoka, or encourage Momoka to punch her. 03. Kannazuki no Miko
Episode 08: “Chikane takes advantage of Himeko”

captcha 03. Kannazuki no Miko

Himemiya Chikane and Kurusugawa Himeko are destined to be the Moon and Sun priestesses that will battle the Orochi to save the world from destruction. However, there’s part of the legend that the world forgot: the fated priestesses must battle each other to the death. Chikane is in love with Himeko but she doesn’t have the courage to express her love. Every passing episode, Himeko is slowly moving away from Chikane because of Oogami Souma, a childhood friend and protector, shows up every time to protect Himeko from danger. Relationship between the two grew and Chikane, unable to protect Himeko with her own hands, is slowly sinking into despair, and eventually abandoning her humanity and became a part of the Orochi like what the prophecies foretold. Driven by lust and despair, and perhaps an act of love, Chikane revealed herself to Himeko as the Orochi and sexually assaulted her. The "taking advantage"(rape), scene is a turning point for the plot and the real battle against the Orochi began.

02. Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito
Episode 13: “I missed you.”

captcha 02. Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito

The story of YamiBou is all about a group of book travellers or travellers of alternate worlds looking for the elusive girl named Eve. This girl Eve travels through different books or world in the Great Library and live within them and then move on to the next world after she turned 16. Hazuki met Hatsumi as a child and ever since they’re living together ever since. Hazuki developed sexual feelings towards Hatsumi and when Hatsumi turned 16, she moved on to the next world. Through the teleportation sequence, Hazuki gained some of Hatsumi’s power, met a book traveller and the entire series is about Hazuki jumping around worlds looking for Hatsumi. Eventually Hazuki found Hatsumi and expressed her love and Hatsumi accepted it. The scene takes place back at her home, right before Hatsumi teleports to another world. It is one of the most detailed and romantic kissing scene in recent memory and I still recall as I yelped “You finally found her, Hazuki!” The ending of the anime is hard to like because it, I dunno, added more implications and turned Hazuki’s love into maternal love. But still, the final kissing scene is one of the best out there.

01. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Part III
Rebellion: “I finally caught you.”

captcha 01. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

After Madoka sacrificed herself by the end of the TV series, she attained godhood and “fixed” everything. However it came with a price: Madoka’s existence ceased to exist in the world. No one in her class remembers her, and her parents didn’t even conceive her. No one remembers, except for Homura. Madoka is there, but she’s on a different plane of existence that no one can reach her. Throughout the movie, Homura soon discovered that she’s turning into a witch because of all the pain and suffering she had experienced, and Kyubey used Homura in an experiment by trapping everyone in an illusion as an attempt to reach and control the now god Madoka. After Homura broke free from Kyubey’s illusion, Madoka descends from the heavens to take away Homura for she’s now a witch. In a twist of fate, Homura turned herself into something more than a witch, takes Madoka out of being a god, and rewrote the entire universe, removing the need for Madoka thus rendering her sacrifice useless, and gave everyone new memories so that no one remembers what Homura did... except for Sayaka for some reason. By the end of the movie, Madoka, Homura, Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami and everyone else now live in a peaceful life. Homura is in love with Madoka to the point of obsession, and did everything by becoming a demon just to get Madoka back in her arms. Homura is the devil and Madoka the god, both are equalizers of a new universe. This kind of obsession and desire to be with the girl she loves makes this our number 1 yuri scene on the list. Homura said it well: “It is the pinnacle of all human emotion. More passionate than hope, far deeper than despair. Love.” Oh and this makes Akemi Homura the gayest girl in the known universe.

In Anime, male characters are usually cool and brave. They are, quite often, role models, the type of men we’d like to be. But every now and then, these strong and inspiring male characters show us their softer side by shedding a tear or two. I particularly love those very special scenes in which we get to see these men crying. It just makes them so human… and adorable. Plus, moments like these teach us that it’s ok for boys to cry too. I once read that crying doesn’t mean you’re weak; it means you’ve been strong for too long. Jeez, I’m getting emotional already. Just check this Top 10 anime boys crying!

10. Kaiji Itou from Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Hakairoku Hen (ep. 25)

kaiji captcha kaiji crying 3
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr 2011 – Sep 2011 "]

I’d say that Kaiji is one big baby and a whiner, but then he does know how to get himself into deep trouble, and it’s not really like he’s crying for stupid things. Kaiji is such a deadbeat that he keeps accumulating debts and owing lots of money to the wrong people. His only way out of this world of debts is gambling, which of course only gets him into more trouble. As a result, we often see him crying in the middle of a gambling venture while hearing the unsettling “zawa zawa” on the background. His greatest and most pathetic cry was when he was about to lose his money and his freedom to the giant pachinko machine, the Bog. I would’ve cried my face off too in that situation.

9. Atsushi Murasakibara from Kuroko no Basket (2nd season, ep 25)

Kuroko no Basket Murasakibara Crying 1 captcha
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct 2013 – Mar 2014 "]

Murasakibara is that huge and intimidating guy who looks so strong and fearless that we just can’t picture him crying. I mean, that kid is a monster, he’s permanently serious, he never laughs or smiles, and he doesn’t seem to care about anything at all other than winning (and candy). He even claims to hate basketball. Of course, however tough he may seem, we get the feeling early on that he doesn’t really hate basketball. In fact, at the end of the Yosen vs Seirin match, Murasakibara gets in the zone, which only the most passionate and talented players could achieve. After losing, this tough 6’10’’ giant lets out a big sob, letting everyone know how important basketball actually was to him.

8. Kirito from Sword Art Online (ep. 3)

Sword Art Online kirito crying captcha
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Jul 2012 – Dec 2012 "]

The 3rd episode on SAO is kind of a filler, but a very powerful one. Kirito meets Sachi and the rest of the Moonlit Black Cats. He develops certain feelings for her, but not for long. The group falls into a trap and Sachi and the rest get killed in front of Kirito. As a good hero, Kirito blames himself for her death even after months have passed. On Christmas Eve however, he gets a message from Sachi telling him her death was inevitable, thus releasing him from his guilt. This is a really touching scene where Kirito just can’t help to break down to tears, as anyone else would.

That scene where the Black Prince loses Shirley has to be one of the most tragic and saddest scenes in anime ever. It just feels so real, Shirley’s trying to say goodbye and how much she loves him, while he’s totally freaking out and ordering her not to die. Yeah, like you could do that. I just love this scene. I find it very powerful and realistic. That is how someone should react to the death of a beloved one; being hysterical, irrational and bursting into uncontrollable tears.

6. Hisashi Mitsui from Slam Dunk (ep. 27)

After quitting basketball, Hisashi Mitsui became that problem kid who just loved getting into fights. When he messed with Shohoku’s basketball team though, he wasn’t expecting to end up crying like a little girl. It turns out that Professor Ansai was very dear to Mitsui. So much in fact, that meeting him at Shohoku’s gym made Mitsui realize the kind of scoundrel he had become. After taking a beating from Shohoku’s freshmen, he begged Professor Ansai for a chance to play on the team. He did it while on his knees, with a sea of tears and blood pouring out of his face.

5. Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto Shippuden (ep. 30)

Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto Shippuden captcha
[Information episodes=" Still airing " aired=" Feb 2007 to date "]

Every once in a while we get to see something quite rare and unexpected on Naruto, and that is Naruto crying. As the brave ninja warrior he is, he’s not prone to show his soft side this way. However, he’s so noble he can’t help to react in this way whenever he fails to save someone. Sasuke and Gaara’s deaths had huge impacts on Naruto. The scene where he cries after Gaara’s death is so powerful. His crying is probably the manliest one I’ve ever seen. Yes, even though his tears shine like pretty diamonds.

4. Okazaki Tomoya from Clannad: After Story (ep. 18)

Okazaki Tomoya from Clannad After Story captcha
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Oct 2008 – Mar 2009 "]

We all know Clannad as that damn show that makes you cry your freaking eyes out. It seems as if the sole purpose of this show is to make you miserable. It’s full of really touching moments that will make you want to lock yourself in your room to cry for days. One of the most heartbreaking scenes to me is the one where Okazaki tells Ushio about Nagisa on the train. As he starts reminiscing, tears stream from his eyes. Before we realize, Ushio follows him and then suddenly everyone (including you) is crying uncontrollably.

3. Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (ep. 5)

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood captcha
[Information episodes=" 64 " aired=" Apr 2009 – Jul 2010 "]

Everyone who’s watched FMAB knows the terrible things that happen on the fourth episode. Nobody expected such atrocity to happen, so we understand just how heartbroken the Elric brothers are on the following episode. There, we can see Edward sitting on some stairs while sulking and crying his heart out under a heavy rain, which fits the mood just fine. I find this moment very powerful and special because it’s the first time we get to know the more human and sensitive side of the main character, who finds himself completely powerless.

2. Yukiteru Amano from Mirai Nikki (ep. 22)

Yukiteru Amano from Mirai Nikki Future Diary captcha
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Oct 2011 – Apr 2012 "]

We all know Yuki is a sissy and a crybaby above all. The only thing he’s not afraid of is admitting how much of a coward he is. He’s probably cried more times than any other male protagonist in the history of anime. But there’s one crying scene in particular that I find as unique and original as creepy. I’m talking about that scene in which he kills his own friends while crying. Yuki is so consumed by Yuno’s insanity that he goes after N°8 and he won’t even let his closest friends stop him. He shoots them down one by one as they get in his way, while crying like the big baby he is. A big psychopathic baby with a gun.

Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul √A captcha
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan 2015 – Mar 2015 "]

The last episode of Tokyo Ghoul √A was full of action and powerful emotions. Few scenes made me cry as much as Kaneki and Hide’s reunion at Anteiku in the middle of the raid. It was beautiful to see them reunited even if for a minute before the place was engulfed in flames. Kaneki ends up crying over his agonizing friend. Before passing out, Hide tells Kaneki: “let’s go home”, which hits us right in the feels, since we don’t really think he’s going to make it. To make it even more dramatic, Kaneki’s tears coming from his ghoul eye are red as blood. Now that’s one cool cry.
